WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

  • Interpret cheese making in the 1860’s and the development of cheese factories in 19th century Canada.
  • Perform a wide range of tasks associated with producing cheddar cheese (e.g. tending the vat & firebox, assist with cheddaring, removing whey, transferring and pressing the cheese rounds).
  • Wash and sanitize all equipment/utensils that are used in the cheese making process, as well as the cheese factory floor and walls, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist with cutting, packaging and labelling cheese to be sold at the Village Store.
  • Participate in activities and events which illustrate the lifestyle of people involved in cheese production during the 1860’s.
  • Provide visitors with information about structures, settings and activities throughout the site.
  • Act to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.
  • Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license or equivalent to haul milk to the cheese factory and whey away from the cheese factory and to drive rounds of cheese to the cheese packaging facility.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
  • An understanding of cheese making stages and techniques, and related food handling and testing requirements.
  • An understanding of the immediate historical context of all activities, artifacts, reproductions and processes employed in the cheese factory.
  • An understanding of the place of a cheese factory within an historical community such as Upper Canada Village and its relationship to agriculture.
  • An understanding of the social, economic and political environment to a level typical of a cheese factory worker of the 1860’s.
  • The ability to perform the cheese making, mopping, washing, sanitation and packaging duties required.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
  • Strong oral communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of the work, skills and activities of an 1860’s cheesemaker and respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.
