Job Purpose:

The Chief Mate is second in command aboard the vessel and must be capable of assuming full command should the Captain become incapacitated. The Captain relies heavily on the Chief Mate to supervise and coordinate day-to-day activities of the deck crew.

Reports to:

Reporting to the Captain of the vessel, the Chief Mate is required to meet all requests of the Captain regarding all matters pertaining to the ship and crew members.

All crew members must comply with all regulations set out by the Canada Labour Code, Canada Shipping Act, Corporate Policy, Company Safety Policy, Transport Canada regulations including Marine Personnel Regulations and any other applicable legislation. All crew members will be required to cross the border to the United States as required by vessel’s voyage operations. Excercising a high degree of professionalism with all third party inspectors or customers is mandatory for all shipboard personnel.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Chief Mate’s duties include, but are not limited to:

· With instruction and supervision from the Captain, become familiar with the handling

characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.)

· Performs navigational watches while underway and safety/anchor/dock watches at times.

· Overall in charge and responsible for safe conduct of vessel cargo operations including Loading / Unloading / Ballast-Deballast operations.

· Assists the Captain with the maintenance of required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats.

· Responsible for deck planned maintenance systems including Tackle book.

· Directs and supervises all members of the deck department, and ensures that each understands and performs their assigned duties adequately. Assists Captain with training and orientation of new crew members.

· Coordinates line-handling when coming to port, anchoring, skiff-launching and retrieval, deck maintenance and safety.

· Participate in the design and execution of emergency drills, generally taking charge of on-scene response actions. Help ensure written drill reports are properly logged.

· Routinely update scheduling and tasking information on the crew mess whiteboard, and pass-the-word when sudden changes need to be made.

***Shift Information***

This position operates under a rotation of 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off.

Required Qualifications

First Mates must hold the following minimum qualifications (subject to variance in the vessel’s safe manning documents):

· Chief Mate license (Unlimited) issued by Transport Canada.

· Pilotage Certificates PM1 or PM2 for Cornwall District, District-1, LO District, District-2.

· Specialized Oil Tanker Endorsement (Level 2)

· Duel Fuel (LNG) Training - Advanced

· MED with respect to STCW basic safety; MED training with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats; MED in advanced firefighting; MED for senior officers; GMDSS-GOC; ECDIS; SEN II; Marine Advanced First Aid.

· Supervision of an Oil Transfer Operation Certificate of Proficiency (SOTO).

· Bridge Resource Management training.

· Certificate of Proficiency as a Ship Security Officer

· A valid Transport Canada Marine Medical and Passport.

· Past experience as a First Mate of a vessel equal to or greater than 3000 tonnes and/or experience on a similar sized vessel with suitable experience as a Second Mate.

· Eligible to enter the US
