Counsellor Advocate Job Description

The Counsellor Advocate (CIW Level 2) is reporting the Supervisor and Management Team about clients’ case plan. The position provides service to clients to assist them in their physical, social, emotional and daily life skills development resulting in clients’ independence and allowing them to function appropriately in the community. The position provides support, comfort, empathy and care towards women and children living at the shelter in a trauma and culturally informed way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Make recommendations to the team on areas for improvement;
  • Set up an individualized plan and review the progress with them;
  • Provide support, encouragement and resources that assist in the achievement of individual growth;
  • Provide information, referral, and support to clients as needed;
  • Communicate the clients’ case plan to the team in order to provide service with consistency;
  • Input case notes and incident reports as required in the system;
  • Plan and co-facilitate regular in-house groups with clients if scheduled for day shift;
  • Plan and co-facilitate land-based healing activities with clients as required;
  • Ensure an adequate stock of client supplies. Keep stock organized;
  • Assess the effectiveness of plans and resources, and adjust if necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • All combinations of relevant education and experience considered;
  • Experience in the development, organization, and facilitation of groups and programs for others;
  • Strong knowledge of community resources such as Vitim Services, Legal Aid, Income Assistance etc. and referral options;
  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to violence against women and children who witness violence;
  • Knowledge of Inuit society values, culture and experience with traditional method of helping and healing;
  • Previous experience in residential setting and/or advocating on behalf of others;
  • Availability to work flexible hours including evenings, midnights and weekends;
  • Criminal Record check, Vulnerable Sector Check, CPR/First Aid, ASSIT, NVCI.

  • Effective time management and organizational skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and interviewing skills;
  • Basic computer skills and administrative skills;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills (English and Inuktitut);
  • Non-judgmental and accepting attitude;
  • Ability to deal with crisis situations through de-escalation;
  • Understanding of a trauma-informed and strength-based approach
  • Patience and maturity to tactfully and diplomatically interact with clients and staff;
  • Ability to work within a team environment;
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.

* Wage: $41.04 hourly + NLA $8.65(Full Time)/ $6.73(Part Time) + $3.50 (Bi-
lingual Bonus-Inuktitut)
