Data Engineer Job at VetStrategy

VetStrategy Vaughan, ON

Data Engineer

Location/Region: Greater Toronto Area (home office based)

The Role

VetStrategy is undergoing an exciting digital transformation. Key to this is to improve the management of our core data sets, bringing data from disparate systems together to improve management information reporting, underpin AI initiatives and enrich the experience of our clients and patients.

Technically, the subject matter expert will be expected to fulfil many of the tasks traditionally covered by a DBA role in a cloud infrastructure environment. We primarily rely on Microsoft products, so experience of Microsoft SQL server and its variants in Azure will be central to the role.

In addition, acting as a data extraction liaison, the subject matter expert will be the technical authority accountable for working with 3rd party practice management vendors to support the PMS conversion program in ensuring data extraction occurs within the project timelines while performing data mapping and validation.

Responsibilities

· The Data Engineer will be a hands-on operational role working with various internal teams and external vendors to ensure data extraction, mapping and validation occurs as it relates to the PMS conversion program.

· The Data Engineer should also expect to spend time acting ‘hands on’ and will be expert at applying the technologies set out in the over-arching strategy.

· Additionally, as part of the wider technology team, the Data Engineer is expected to provide technical guidance to teams working with data extraction, storage, normalization, and neighbouring technologies, most notably Microsoft’s Power Platform and Azure infrastructure.

Background, Experience and Qualifications

This is a technically specialised role, and the role holder will be expert in:

· The administration of database systems, primarily Microsoft SQL Server but, additionally, MongoDB, MariaDB.

· Relevant technologies in Microsoft Azure, such as SQL Managed Instance, SQL Managed Database, Azure Data Factory, etc.

· The use of REST APIs, JSON and ETL technologies/protocols for moving data between systems.

· Some exposure to business intelligence tools, such as Microsoft PowerBI, would be helpful.

· Scripting tools and experience with programming/development in Visual Studio/C#.

Additionally, the role holder must be:

· Adept in the use of enterprise architecture and data modelling frameworks to develop artefacts that represent and support the management of a complex, divergent, data environment.

· Experienced in setting and driving delivery of a data strategy, considering business goals, technical merit and commercial impacts.

· Confident in delivering through Agile/Scrum as well as traditional waterfall frameworks.

· Experienced in championing the use of architecture and code repositories to ensure consistent working practice across all teams.

· Cognisant of, and responsive to, requirements to develop in line with information security best practice.

· Capable of interfacing the IT Infrastructure team to ensure non-functional requirements, such as performance, scalability, resilience and identity/access management, are effectively delivered in the end-to-end solution.

· Familiar with ITIL (change, incident and problem management) and comfortable with delivering in that framework.

· Comfortable with being the face of IT – working directly with Finance, Marketing and other business units – for the systems and services in scope.

· Ready to think internationally; is sensitive and responsive to the needs of business units across multiple jurisdictions, often with local issues and priorities.

Personal characteristics

· Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to tune style and approach to create effective relationships with a diverse range of technical and non-technical stakeholders.

· Has natural technical gravitas; speaks with authority on complex issues and is regarded as a natural ‘thought leader’ by their peers.

· Is curious, with an open, questioning style with the confidence to challenge assumptions and ask “why?” constructively.

· Confident in dealing with uncertainty; can analyse and pick apart a disorganised environment, using risk and reward-based approaches to determining a strategic direction.

· Interested in and an active contributor to automation and continuous improvement, recognising that small changes as well as big-ticket projects create a real business benefit.

· Meticulous and accurate, maintaining documentation to a high standard.

· Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage a demanding portfolio of projects.

· A self-starter, decisive and able to work at pace, confident to prioritise, take ownership and make appropriate decisions to drive topics forward – commits and delivers.
