Location: Hanlan Boat Club Y Day Camp, 6 Regatta Rd, Toronto, ON


Work Hours: Part time hours in June for training, then Monday – Friday 37.5 hours per week for July 1 – September 1

Camp Counsellors (Rowing) are responsible for ensuring the successful day-to-day implementation of camp programming. They will be responsible for a group size between eight to twelve campers that are range from the ages of 6 to 15 years old. Camp Counsellors ensure that all children and youth have a safe and positive camp experience leading to personal growth and leadership opportunities. These counsellors will have a focus on rowing and be NLS certified. Camp Counsellors lead campers through various camp programs such as rowing, canoeing/ kayaking and biking, along with cooperative small and large group games!


In this role, you will:


  • Program plan and ensure daily and weekly YMCA camp plans are completed and in line with meeting objectives of program modules set up by supervisor
  • Deliver programs that are following the plan and ensure campers are having a fun, safe and engaging high quality experience
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp programs with camper group, including recreational swimming
  • Supervise a camper group ensuring that each camper is safe, supported and welcome at all times during the camp experience
  • Assist teaching and coaching campers rowing fundamentals and supervise while on the water
  • Prepare rowing activity plans and boat allocations
  • Responsible for keeping site clean, organized and safe before and after sessions
  • Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; arriving on time, and actively participating and contributing to the development of all camp staff
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and contribute to the cleaning and maintenance to camp site
  • Act as a positive role model for the campers and fellow staff through embodying the YMCA values, policies and procedures, Day Camp conditions of employment/guidelines and the Ontario Camping Association standards

You bring:

  • Minimum age 16 years old by December 31st
  • Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’ certificate valid until the last day of contract
  • National Lifeguard (NL) Award is an asset
  • Ability to swim and have rowing experience
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card is an asset
  • RCA Coaching Certification is an asset
  • Safe Sport Certification is an asset
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and
  • excellent communication with families, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
