Work Hours: Part time hours in June for training, then 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday from July 1 – September 1

Day Camp Leadership Trainers will work to facilitate and deliver a high-quality Counsellor in Training program. Through Day Camp Leadership Trainers, youth will gain a deeper understanding of leadership theory and the skills required to become a Day Camp Counsellor. These staff will be required to participate in one, four night overnight experience a month to help youth further their leadership skills.


In this role, you will:


  • Ensure daily and weekly YMCA camp program plans are filled out properly and approved by the Camp Director ensuring programs are in line with and meeting the objectives of the leadership program modules and workshops
  • Responsible for the delivery and facilitation of high-quality leadership programming
  • Provide leadership to youth by monitoring, coaching and mentoring as well as providing on-going feedback, and performance appraisals at the end of the program
  • Role model behaviour management strategies and promote discussion and problem solving within the group to best meet the needs of children
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp programs with campers, including recreational swim Demonstrate a high level of accountability and act as a positive, active and inclusive role model within the staff team
  • Ensure youth are being safely supervised and supported at all times during their day camp experience providing opportunities for all campers to experience success and grow as a leader
  • Spend the weeks where the program is not running planning and prepping for the program, assisting with break coverage/staff absences and assisting the Camp Director where support is needed at the camp location
  • Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; arriving on time, and actively participating and contributing to the development of all camp staff
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and contribute to the cleaning, safety and maintenance to camp sites
  • Act as a positive role model for the campers and fellow staff through embodying the YMCA values, policies and procedures, Day Camp conditions of employment/guidelines and the Ontario Camping Association standards

You bring:

  • Completed or currently enrolled in post-secondary education (preferred)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’ certificate valid until the last day of contract
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a camp environment
  • Experience with YMCA Day Camps an asset
  • Experience delivering leadership programming or workshops for youth
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with families, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
