The Design Associate will assist the Senior Designer to execute all aspects of product development for their specialized category, as led by the Design Director, reporting to the Senior Designer. This individual will be responsible to assist in creating seasonal Menswear and SMU collections, keeping within Roots brand vision, seasonal direction and market needs.

The Assistant Designer of Menswear for Roots will be responsible for and evaluated on the following:

• Use market and trend intelligence with an understanding of the current and historical business to assist the design of seasonal collections that are relevant to the customer and reflects our brand identity.
• Create and Maintain design sketch files as per Roots design standards.
• Create and Maintain seasonal Graphic Diplomas with all relevant information: Fabric, fit, reference style, makers and colourways.
• Create and Maintain Tech Packs using Roots PLM system, this includes and is not limited to: Assign style numbers, initiate tech pack creation merch page, BOM, colour and images. Successful candidate will also perform sketch updates, after sketch review and SMS reviews as well as any updates from fit sessions.
• Assist Designer in presenting seasonal collections showcasing silhouette, fabric, print, pattern, and color range, take detailed notes in seasonal product review meetings.
• Action all revisions to sketch, tech pack and graphic diploma on product assigned to the assistant designer.
• Assist Designer in fittings, maintain style tracking sheet of all styles in development, including trim submission sign off, strike-off requests and SMS requests collaborating with Product Development team.
• Work collaboratively with Graphics team to build seasonal graphic stories, update graphic diplomas with artwork numbers, sizing and grading
• Work collaboratively cross departmentally on shared programs to ensure alignment
• Consistently researching the marketplace, including our competitors, for inspirations and influences in product, fabric, innovation, colour, trims and price

Top candidates for the Assistant Designer Menswear role will possess the following:

• Degree or Diploma in Fashion Design or related creative field.
• Minimum of 1-2 years experience in apparel industry is preferred, work placements and co-operative placements will be considered.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office is essential
• Experience in operating in PLM/PDM systems is not required but is preferred
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrate a passion for the Roots brand and a willingness to learn, innovate and think BIG.
• Demonstrate an ability to take initiative to achieve department and company objectives
