Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Health & Safety, the Director, Health & Safety is accountable for providing leadership across Teck on health and safety strategy and supporting initiatives. This position is based in Vancouver, Canada.


The Director, Health & Safety will be responsible for planning and leading all aspects of Teck's health and safety systems and must have a detailed and up to date understanding of associated requirements including legal issues. By identifying, managing and promoting continuous improvement in health and safety leadership, the successful candidate will help lead Teck to an enhanced culture of safety among our employees and contractors to drive Teck’s vision of Everyone Going Home Safe and Healthy Every Day.


Both a motivational and innovative strategist, the successful candidate will coach operations in the development and implementation of policies and procedures which will help to reduce incidents, illnesses and injuries as well as be able to develop close working relationships with the senior Business Unit management teams, operations, project and exploration teams.


The successful candidate must have excellent analytical, technical and interpersonal skills and lead companywide initiatives in health and safety management.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor health and safety rules and procedures

  • Develop and implement strategies for health and safety practices and programs, leading cross-functional teams to enhance areas such as critical risk management and incident investigation and learning

  • Monitor and assess company-wide health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and management system standards. This includes identification of improvement opportunities and providing coaching in these areas

  • Promote a health and safety culture through regular visits to operations, organizing conferences and information exchange which provides for continuous improvement and reduced incident rates across the organization

  • In partnership with operations, guide corporate management to establish annual health and safety objectives and rollout supporting strategies

  • Promote health and safety leadership amongst employees, supervisors and senior management through coaching, presentations and proven safety leadership

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collect and evaluate information on operations and report to senior management and the Corporate HSEC Risk Management Committee. Identify and recommend areas for improvement in systems and procedures both corporately and at operations and develop new metrics and measures to assess and monitor performance and behaviours

  • Assist in the implementation and design of software systems to reduce reporting workload while improving information exchange

  • Participate with operations to conduct investigations and report on serious incidents including the nature of incidents, identification of trends and communication with operations and senior management. Ensure that critical findings from investigations are communicated to all other operations and follow-up to ensure recommendations are implemented

  • Monitor legislative developments and assist operations with regulators. Inform senior leadership of the implications of existing, new and evolving legislative initiatives in active jurisdictions and the associated liabilities

  • Develop and implement associated training modules at the corporate level and assist new operations in the establishment of health and safety policies, procedures and training modules

  • Demonstrate thought leadership in strategy development and execution by identifying best practices and integrate into Teck’s learning culture

  • Maintain contact with other industry professionals and attendance of conferences and various industry meetings for the purpose of improving corporate learning

  • Identify and communicate trends which result in improvements in knowledge and reduction of injury and evaluate overall company performance against our industry peers

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of Health and Safety experience in a leadership role. A complimentary graduate degree or tertiary qualification preferred

  • Solid understanding of mining industry fundamentals

  • Experience in the global mining or extractives sector preferred

  • Experience with hazard identification and risk management preferably with critical control risk management

  • Solid knowledge of regulatory requirements in key jurisdictions

  • Experience with ICAM or similar incident investigation methodology

  • Effective interpersonal and influencing skills with demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and coach individuals and teams across all levels and functions

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Embraces teamwork: working successfully with others

  • Process focused, results oriented, and highly productive

  • Ability to self lead and develop corporate-wide strategies

  • Knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of Health and Safety management systems and Human and Organizational Performance

  • Demonstrated skills in data analytics and reporting with solid computer skills

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to operating and project locations at approximately 35% of time to all Teck operations and field sites including those at high altitude (over 14,000 feet) elevations
