The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is a dynamic and innovative regulatory agency responsible for delivering comprehensive regulatory oversight of Ontario's alcohol, cannabis, gaming, and horse racing industries. The AGCO is looking for a talented, passionate, curious, and driven leader with a strong commitment to public service to become a Director of Regulatory Compliance. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will lead the strategic oversight and operational direction of the AGCO's regulatory compliance activities in the liquor, cannabis, land-based gaming, charitable gaming, lottery and horse racing industries.

What can I expect to do in this role?

The successful candidate will be responsible for a diverse range of accountabilities, including:
  • Providing strategic oversight and direction to deliver exceptional compliance activities to mitigate potential regulatory non-compliance by licensees and registrants, with a particular focus on key regulatory priorities.
  • Providing strategic oversight and direction of horse race officiating services.
  • Building a high performing team supported by a coaching culture and exemplifying the AGCO's people-first mindset.
  • Designing and implementing innovative approaches to monitoring and assuring compliance with priority areas of regulatory focus.
  • Determining appropriate regulatory outcomes and responses in relation to compliance incidents
  • Supporting the development and implementation of regulatory reform in all lines of business.
  • Implementing horse racing initiatives to enhance the safety of horse racing participants and protecting the welfare of the equine athlete.
  • Acting as statutory decision maker with respect to incidents of non-compliance.
  • Leading the management of contentious, high profile compliance matters, and appropriately escalating serious matters for internal awareness and/or resolution.
  • Fostering strong and productive relationships across the regulated industries and regulatory and policing partners.
  • Effectively collaborating and influencing other Divisions within the ACGO to successfully deliver organizational imperatives.
  • Acting as a senior leader within the AGCO, championing AGCO priorities and leading an evolving and ambitious agenda.


How do I qualify?

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Post-Secondary education in a relevant field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Curiosity, innovative thinking, and the ability to ask the tough questions and respectfully challenge the status quo.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Experience with and good working knowledge of relevant regulatory legislation, investigation/inspection techniques and processes, and demonstrated ability to work effectively within these areas.
  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict/crisis resolution, and management experience
  • A proven ability to build strong relationships and communicate effectively and with tact and diplomacy at all levels and with all stakeholders.
  • Strong political acuity and the ability to effectively manage high profile issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and successfully meet frequent deadlines in an ever-changing, complex environment.
  • Ability to make sound decisions when faced with difficult/confrontational situations.
  • Ability to be proactive, take initiative, and exercise sound independent judgment with limited direction
  • A strong commitment to doing the right thing, even when it is difficult
  • A valid driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to an enhanced background check for AGCO Directors.
