WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

  • Interpret the life, work, skills, and activities of professional classes (pastor, doctor, schoolteacher, etc.) and domestic life (family, children, social activities, day-to-day life at home, etc.) in the 1860’s.
  • Provide visitors with information about artifacts, structures, settings, and activities throughout the site, ensuring the resolution of visitor concerns or questions.
  • Instruct adults and children participating in various experiential programming such as overnight camps and school programs.
  • Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.
  • Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:
  • Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Sector check).

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
  • An understanding of the historical context of all activities performed and the general social, economic and political environment of mid-19th century Canada.
  • Basic knowledge of conservation practices to competently perform a variety of duties associated with the monitoring and cleaning of artifacts.

COMMUNICATION AND CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS
You have:
  • Strong oral communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of a variety of family and domestic-related themes (e.g., meal preparation, food preservation, seasonality of life, agricultural, cultural, and economic influences, etc.) and to respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.

INTERPRETIVE AND DOMESTIC SKILLS
You have:
  • The ability to interpret the life, work, skills, and activities of an 1860’s domestic or professional worker in a variety of settings.
  • The ability to learn and demonstrate appropriate activities and pastimes for the time period.
  • The ability to perform under direction general tasks associated with keeping a household or professional environment in the 1860’s, e.g., washing dishes, cleaning, handwork, etc.
