While most of our team members are concentrated in southern Ontario, we are not limited by geography, nor do we buy into the world of daily commuting. Our team operates from virtual, home-based offices to reduce the environmental and social effects of commuting and to help extend our geographic presence across the marketplace. We stay connected through regular meetings, the use of a wide array of technology, and specialized collaborative workspaces.

Job Description

An intern ecological position with the Ontario branch of GEI that will focus on the environmental approvals process for a range of industries, including land development, linear infrastructure and resource extraction, among others.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collate information from various sources, including communications with agencies and stakeholders, to establish baseline conditions
  • Assist with wildlife surveys, including reptiles, amphibians, bats, birds, terrestrial crayfish, fisheries, and Species at Risk (SAR)
  • Support vegetation and wetland surveys including Ecological Land Classification (ELC) mapping, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System surveys, species taxonomy, and rare plant identification
  • Data management, processing, and interpretation of field results to assess for presence of SAR, significant natural heritage features, and other environmental considerations
  • Work with other technical staff and project managers to provide input to natural heritage assessments, inventories and impact assessments, technical correspondence, Endangered Species Act permitting and registrations, and project reports

Qualifications

  • Completion of, or progressing towards, a degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Field survey experience and understanding of standard survey protocols and use of field equipment
  • Able to work in a team and independently
  • Familiar with the Greater Toronto area is an asset
  • Valid drivers license and vehicle access is required
