Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN) invites applications for a part-time (14 hours per week) term Editor and Writer. This appointment will commence January 3, 2023 and end December 31, 2023. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff Scale, Level 16.

Duties: Remote work within BC may be possible; however, preference will be given to candidates who can work from our Prince Rupert, Terrace, Hazelton, or Smithers campuses. The Editor and Writer will have three key areas of focus, which are:

  • Policy and procedures to support the Director, President’s Office in standardization across the college and Board policy and procedures, in tone, style and content
  • Editing, proofreading, and writing to ensure a high-level of written professionalism in College documents for all audiences, but particularly for committee reading and internal/external communications, public relations, industry relations, government reporting and marketing materials.
  • Style guide creation and maintenance to support the CMTN community efforts to create error-free and standardized communications and communication processes in all print and digital platforms.

Illustrative sample of tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Edit marketing, recruitment and communications materials to ensure error-free, consistent, and effective products
  • Coach support staff on effective writing strategies for their projects, providing feedback and recommendations to improve clarity, tone, and style for the appropriate audience when needed.
  • Research and write compelling stories to celebrate CMTN staff, student, and alumni achievements based on direction from the Executive Director.
  • Develop and pilot a system of CMTN community requests for editing of formal documents allowing for tight turnarounds and follow-up questions
  • Work with the CMTN Leadership Team to write communiques, such as government reports and updates, engage in research, and write first drafts of key documents as requested
  • Perform research for various writing projects and ensure content is accurate and evidence-based
  • Create and maintain the style guide and provides tutorials to CMTN employees
  • Work closely with the members of the Communications, Marketing, and Recruitment teams and support External Relations events, including CMTN Foundation events
  • Work closely with the Director, President’s Office to ensure that the policies and procedures that are developed or revised are well written and standardized
  • Other related duties (of similar scope and complexity) as assigned

Qualifications

Master’s degree a related field (e.g., English, Technical Writing, Professional Writing, or Communications). A Bachelor’s degree in a related field with significant related work experience may be considered. A minimum of five years of experience working as an editor or writer in a professional, deadline-driven- environment (preferably in a unionized environment).

Required skills, abilities, and knowledge includes:

  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills and a flair for communicating in written English
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent research and proofreading skills
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and collaborate with others in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • High degree of computer literacy, including skills in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat and use of the Microsoft suite
  • Demonstrated expertise working collaboratively with colleagues, building and maintaining
    effective relationships with a wide variety of partners, from diverse backgrounds
  • Able to work well with, and gain the trust of, faculty and staff across the campuses and departments
  • Ability to produce accurate content to tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism and work as a team member
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred
