PURPOSE & SUMMARY

Sumas First Nation’s Lands Department is seeking an Environmental Archaeology Monitor to work directly with project partners to ensure traditional land use provide environmental, cultural and archaeological monitoring services to minimize any impact that specific projects may present.

Reporting to the Sumas First Nation Lands Manager or the Environmental Compliance Officer, the Environmental Archaeology Monitor will monitor compliance with the environmental, cultural, and archaeological commitments and requirements of the specific projects.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor the implementation of approved measures to minimize Traditional Land Use and cultural/heritage impacts.
  • Provide traditional knowledge when dealing with Traditional Land Use and cultural/heritage resources.
  • Support chance-find identification of environmental resources and archaeological sensitivities that have indigenous cultural and heritage value.
  • Provide feedback on the effectiveness of the approved measures.
  • Reviewing Project environmental reference documents (support to be provided) and required environmental protection measures.
  • Monitor environmental/cultural compliance with permit applications and land use plans.
  • Complete all applicable safety, compliance, and project-specific training.
  • Attend meetings and discuss any issues of concern that pertain to indigenous cultural and heritage resources.
  • Participate in other environmental inspection duties, as directed.
  • Prepare and submit daily reports following an established format.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license, with access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Completion of a pre-access 12 panel drug and alcohol test.
  • Completion of Grade 12 is preferred.
  • Willing to complete all required training, including Ecora training and follow Ecora policies and procedures.
  • Compliance with Ecora Project Health and Safety Plans including those associated with COVID-19.
  • Arrive on site, as scheduled, with all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as outlined in the Worksite Requirements. PPE and other related tools and equipment will be provided.
  • Ability to take notes and prepare daily reports.
  • Flexibility, in terms of work schedule, to accommodate project schedule.
  • Be equipped for working in all types of weather conditions.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with Microsoft Office, is preferred.
  • Experience or knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions is an asset.
  • Experience or knowledge of environmental/cultural field work and/or construction is an asset.
  • Ability to work with various stakeholder groups and people from different backgrounds on active construction sites.
  • Ability to effectively plan and manage time wisely.
  • High professional and ethical standards.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with peers, managers, community members.
