Overall Job Responsibility:
Reporting to the Manager of E&E, the Epidemiologist works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide leadership and expertise in population health assessment and surveillance using demonstrated knowledge related to the collection, analysis, and timely reporting of data. The Epidemiologist will conduct duties consistent with the requirements of the Population Health Assessment and Surveillance Protocol for the Ontario Public Health Standards (2018; OPHS) and broadly supports the implementation of the OPHS Foundational Standards.

Key areas of Responsibility:
All competencies apply to the initiation, planning and implementation of epidemiological research and population health assessment and surveillance to support Health Unit planning and evaluation activities. The Epidemiologist is also expected to be available for province-wide epidemic investigations, as needed by the provincial Ministry of Health.

Position Qualifications

Education, training, & experience

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited University in Epidemiology or Master’s Degree of Public Health (Epidemiology).
  • Experience as an Epidemiologist in a public health or related setting.
  • Several years of experience analysing data using statistical software such as Stata, SAS, SPSS, EpiData, ArcGIS, and familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other packages and programming languages currently used to collect, analyze, and report epidemiological data in Ontario.
Other Requirements:
  • Current knowledge of public health issues and indicators, the theory and application of epidemiological concepts, trend analysis and forecasting, quality assurance principles and related best practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of infectious disease surveillance, including outbreak detection, investigation, and analysis.
  • Experience with public health data sources such as CCHS, iPHIS, Cognos, BORN, Census/NHS, etc would be an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Clear initiative and excellent communication skills, with the ability to present data and concepts to diverse audiences in oral and written format.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and to utilize positive problem solving solutions, including negotiation and motivation.
  • Ability to work in a high pressure environment and respond to competing priorities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e., occasional evenings and weekends) when necessary.
  • Immunizations and TB screening as per WECHU policies.
  • Satisfactory vulnerable sector police clearance.
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours, and 1 million dollars in liability insurance.
