We are looking for a Financial Controller to join our client’s team. This role can be based out of Edmonton or Calgary.

Business Link is a not-for-profit and government-funded organization responsible for serving entrepreneurs and small business owners and operators in Alberta.

Founded over 25 years ago, Business Link has served thousands of companies and organizations through webinars, events/conferences/symposiums and direct one-on-one consultation. The Company’s head office is in Edmonton and is looking to expand to co-locations in Calgary, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat (employees outside of Edmonton typically work in their home offices). In addition to providing services, the Company also manages funding programs on behalf of the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. Business Link partners with many other organizations in the Alberta small business eco-system.

Position Details

The controller is responsible for all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. The Company’s statements are audited annually by an independent auditing firm appointed by our shareholders (members).

We are looking for someone passionate about small business and entrepreneurship in Alberta and who wants to join a committed, energetic and engaged team. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, this position plays a critical role in ensuring efficient and timely financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting.

Job Duties & Tasks

· Manages all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, and Revenue Recognition

· Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances for the Company’s leadership team (on a monthly basis) and Board and Audit Committee (on a quarterly basis).

· Responsible for and prepares monthly and quarterly financial statements

· Responsible for and prepares annual statements and notes

· Coordinates and completes annual audit interacting with the Company’s Management, Audit Committee and Company Auditors

· Supports quarterly-end and year-end close process and the preparation of reports to Government partners

· Ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting

· Develops and documents business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls

Key Linkages

· Reports to the Director – Finance and Administration

· Interacts on a regular basis with the Executive Director and other Leadership Team Members (Directors – Marketing and Communications, Product and Business Development)

· Reports to the Company’s Audit Committee on a quarterly basis

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business/Accounting, or relevant post-secondary education or an acceptable combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in accounting and finance management preferably in a not-for-profit organization
  • Experienced in budgeting and forecasting (preparing 5 year three-way financial models)
  • Experience in preparing full statements together with notes
  • Experience in working with external auditors and presenting to boards and audit committees

· Strong knowledge of Microsoft applications and Sage Accounting products

· Ability to maintain filing systems and databases

· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

· Demonstrated relationship-building and teamwork skills

· Sound judgement and critical thinking skills

· Strong multi-tasking skills: ability to manage competing deadlines and prioritize workload

· Strong customer-service orientation

· A professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)

· Salary range: $80,000 - $90,000
