General Trade Maintenance Mechanic (Building Operator 1) Job at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

Under the supervision of the Manager, Building & Environmental Services, the General Trade Maintenance Mechanic (Building Operator 1) will be responsible for performing general trade maintenance at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs daily mechanical rounds on all equipment and machinery within Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, including:
    • Daily rounds of boilers, motors, pumps, fans and piping
    • Conducting minor repairs to all building infrastructure equipment
    • Cleaning of sink, plaster and janitor traps
    • Repairing and installing flooring/baseboards; ceiling, carpet and ceramic tiles; and window blinds and cranks
    • Basic plumbing, including repairs of toilets, sinks, washer-faucet-traps, showers, floor drains
    • Assists with generator test and running weekly test, including checking for oil and coolant levels.
    • Installing Acrovyn, wall bumpers, and whiteboards
    • Repair and replace lights around the building, including replacing ballast and 120v fixtures
    • Changing and repairing outlets and switches 120V
    • Assists electricians with replacing 347v ballasts
    • Routine checks to TV and DVD players
    • Perform checks and minor repairs to Code blue system, Nurses call system, Panic stations
    • Cleaning of terrace, including floor drains and small catch basins
    • Cleaning air vents, assists with cleaning of AHUs, and replacement of filters
    • Small repairs to the garbage compactor
    • Assisting with monthly fire drills
  • Performs general pool maintenance, including pool readings, completing necessary adjustments to water chemistry, responding to pool fouling, vacuuming, backwashing filters and minor troubleshooting for both pools.
  • Proactively observes and reports all items in need of possible repair, repainting, renovations, etc.
  • Responds to requests and emergencies on weekend and afternoon shifts and acts as main point of contact for staff to execute work orders
  • Responsible for communicating with staff, clients and families to resolve maintenance issues with and without supervision
  • Maintains shops, electrical rooms, mechanical rooms and storage areas to ensure they remain neat, clean and free of hazards
  • Supports with in-house renovations including painting, drywall installations, taping, mudding, hanging pictures, and moving and assembling office equipment and furniture
  • Participates in reviewing operating standards, policies and procedures as required
  • Assists with safety Building Codes, reporting immediately to the scene of any announced Code Red to assist in putting out fire, assisting clients, etc
  • Liaise and works with contractors and external service providers on special projects
  • Assists with events, including stage set up and transport, lighting, HVAC
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, clients and families.
  • Uses, maintains, and stores all hand tools safely and correctly, promptly reports any breakage or loss
  • Operates all equipment according to established safety procedures; promptly reports any needed repairs
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Three years general trades maintenance experience with skills in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of equipment and machinery, including HVAC systems
  • One year of experience as a pool operator or equivalent considered as an asset but not mandatory, ability to maintain therapy pool systems according to Public Health Standards
  • Diploma in Building Environmental Services or Systems Maintenance Technician, considered an asset.
  • "G" Class Ontario Driver’s License
  • Basic computer skills to access Metasys HVAC controls, email, Intranet, Fire Alarm, Elevator and Security Systems
  • Demonstrated ability and skills in HVAC maintenance, plumbing, pool operations
  • Able to work as a team member, contributing skills and ideas to provide the best possible environment for clients, their families, staff and visitors
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, including reading, written and spoken
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
