Hours of Work : Shifts vary from weekends and during the week in the evenings.

Job Summary
Supervises and administers recreation sports, arts and leisure preschool programs. Ensures a positive and safe environment for participants and peers.

This position is primarily required for the leadership of programs based on the following criteria:

  • Number of program participants (enrolment in program).
  • Duration and/or type of program (e.g. Pre-school programs of 2 or more hours).
  • Safety of program participants.
  • The degree of parental involvement.

Job Duties include:

  • Coaches and provides leadership to a group of 5 to 10 Participants, ensuring that they improve on a regular basis.
  • Divides class into small appropriate instructional groups.
  • Monitors class groups ensuring proper instruction and level of participant satisfaction.
  • Acts as a liaison between parents and instructors to discuss issues, concerns and requests.
  • Reviews lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program. Modifies lesson plans specific to the abilities of each group. Reviews lesson plans with the Recreation Supervisor/Program Co-ordinator prior to class and submits at the end of each session.
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining an inventory of supplies, reporting to the Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor any items needing replacement.
  • Keeps attendance records and checks with participants who have extended absences. Gives all new participant names that are not on the list to the Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor.
  • Checks and ensures all participant emergency and medical information is obtained through the completion of a personal data form on the participants’ first day.
  • Ensures all program participants are aware of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations.
  • Directly guides volunteers and PT Program Assistants as required.
  • Advises Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries.
  • Ensures safety at ALL times, enforcing safety regulations as set out by the City of Markham sports, fitness, arts and leisure programs policies and procedures. (e.g. wearing CSA approved hockey helmets for skating programs and mandatory masks for pre-school children).
  • Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants.
  • Escorts pre-school children to the washroom or change room, ensuring that preschool children are never left in the sole attendance of a volunteer.
  • Unlocks and locks-up the facility/program location as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Attending or partial completion of high school education. Courses or training in early childhood development at the high school or college level.
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience working/volunteering in a pre-school facility e.g. day care, church etc. with pre-school children ages 2 to 5 is required. Leadership experience in this environment leading and organizing programs is a required part of this experience.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons, parents and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Thorough understanding of basic principles of early childhood development.
  • Interpersonal skills suitable for working with preschool children including a patient and nurturing style.
  • Individual should be comfortable leading a group in song.
