The Human Resources Department (HRD) is a vehicle for facilitating decision making for staff at the corporate and department level across our integrated health network (Network) providing advice/support for multiple departments/programs. The HRD provides a service that empowers and supports management and line staff in the delivery of initiatives that requires utilizing human capital to ensure the optimal delivery of service provision i.e., Corporate Health And Safety Services; Total Rewards And HR Support Services e.g., Compensation And Benefits, Payroll; HR Programs And Consulting Services e.g., Recruitment, Learning and Organization Development, Employee Service Centre, Labour and Employee Relations.

The Labour Relations department is responsible for managing labour and employee relations for the Network, including collective bargaining, grievance administration, and working with our union partners through formal meeting structures and informal means to proactively address issues collaboratively.

Reporting to the Manager, Labour Relations, the Labour Relations Business Partner is a senior professional role providing a full range of activities in support of the labour relations team across the network. Primary responsibilities involve developing and maintaining collaborative working relations with union partners, supporting grievance administration, including conducting research and gathering information for grievance meetings, mediation and/or arbitration, preparation of responses to grievances, providing coaching support to management, and maintaining labour relations database and statistical information. The Labour Relations Business Partner will also provide counseling advice on the interpretation of collective agreement provisions, including obtaining information and guidance from external parties (i.e. Ontario Hospital Association, legal counsel). The Labour Relations Business Partner will also provide support to the collective bargaining process, including coordinating activities, conducting research, preparing negotiation documents, and participating in the bargaining team. The role will be located at SMH with the expectation that the incumbent may travel between sites as needed. Option of hybrid remote work is available.

Overview of Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in business/industrial relations/ human resources management or recognized equivalent of education and experience required.
  • 3 or more years’ experience in a Labour relations role and exposure to union negotiations.
  • Superior knowledge of legal principles and framework associated with all aspects of Labour Relations (including collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, discipline and discharge, performance management, attendance management, etc.).
  • Solid knowledge of Human Resources policies and procedures, and employment-related legislation (Labour Relations Act, Pay Equity Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act, Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act, etc.);
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
