St. Thomas University
Limited Term Appointment in Social Work

The School of Social Work, St. Thomas University, invites applications for a 12-month limited-

term appointment, to begin July 1, 2023, pending budgetary approval.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of

1,600. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Bachelor and

Master level Social Work degrees.

The School of Social Work currently offers three social work programs: a BSW, an MSW, and

the Mi’kmaq/Maliseet Bachelor of Social Work Program (MMBSW). The primary objective of

the BSW program is to facilitate student development to a beginning level of practice

competence. Our MSW program aims to further student development as advanced structural

social work practitioners. The Mi’kmaq/Maliseet program provides First Nations individuals

with an opportunity to receive social work education within a flexible and culturally relevant

framework.

As a School of Social Work, we are committed to the teaching and development of a structural

social work perspective among faculty, students, staff, and the larger community. To achieve

this, the School of Social Work has adopted an approach based on the values of openness,

respect, collegiality, mutuality, accountability, and reconciliation. First, faculty endeavour to

prepare students to practice structural social work by fostering critical thinking and critical self-

reflection skills and by teaching the values, ethics, knowledge, and skills required to promote

social justice within their practice. Second, we emphasize our responsibility as social workers to

assist people in achieving their potential and to work for the development of the social and

material conditions which would enable this growth. Third, we understand that this can only

occur within a context that seeks ecological justice and lifelong learning.

The School of Social Work is seeking applicants for a 12-month Limited Term Appointment

who will have knowledge of critical social work theory, including structural social work, and its

application in diverse areas. The successful candidate will be expected to teach six, 3-credit

courses, including, but not limited to: Diversity in Social Work and Community Organizing, and

be eligible to register in the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers.

An MSW degree is required, and post-master's professional social work experience is preferred.

Completed applications must include a letter of application that describes the applicant’s

teaching experience and potential contributions to the program as specified in the qualifications

listed above. The application must also include a curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier that

provides evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations,

and a statement of teaching philosophy. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of

reference sent directly to Dr. Jenni Cammaert, Hiring Committee Chair, School of Social Work,

St. Thomas University at cammaert@stu.ca.

Closing Date: March 31st, 2023 at noon or when the position is filled. Applicants are

responsible for ensuring that their completed applications, including letters of reference, are

received by this date.

Offers of employment will be conditional upon a candidate being able to adhere to the current

university COVID-19 policies.

St. Thomas University encourages applications from all qualified candidates and is committed to

the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, including employment equity for the following

under-represented groups identified in the Canadian Employment Equity Act: women, aboriginal

persons, members of visible minority groups and persons with disabilities. All qualified

candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be

given priority. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

St. Thomas University is situated on the traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik,
