Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Manager, Residence Life (MRL) leads and directs all aspects of the residence life program at the College. The incumbent leads a team that is responsible for fostering a safe, supportive and inclusive community that is conducive to students' academic success and personal growth. The MRL develops and oversees a variety of programs, services and initiatives in residence that support students' learning, transition, sense of belonging, health and wellbeing, and co-curricular involvement.

The MRL is responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision, and coaching of a team of professional and/or paraprofessional staff. The incumbent works closely with the residence council and a variety of student clubs to create a vibrant and engaged community, while advising on a variety of matters related to institutional policy and financial management. The MRL upholds the residence Code of Behaviour and community standards by investigating possible violations and deciding outcomes. They are also responsible for overseeing and responding to a variety of complex and urgent situations, often arising after hours.

The incumbent must be student-centred and have a genuine desire to live amongst a community of students, attend student events, and maintain an office that is open and accessible.


Required Qualifications:


EDUCATION:

A University degree in a relevant discipline and/or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.


EXPERIENCE:

Minimum four (4) years’ professional experience working in a university student life or residence setting.

Experience in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating programming designed to support student success in higher education.

Formal training in counselling and mediation.

Facilitation and workshop design experience at the post-secondary level.

Experience in advising students in transition and experience working with diverse communities and an understanding of international student issues.

Experience in supervising staff and volunteers.

Experience in developing, planning, and overseeing large scale events.

Experience with budgeting, and student programming.

Experience with the exercise of disciplinary action in an undergraduate residence community.

Experience with student safety and first response management and administrating and enforcing the residence discipline system in an undergraduate residence community.

Working knowledge of and commitment to relevant student development/leadership theories.

Experience in administration, policy interpretation and event planning.


SKILLS:

Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and conflict mediation skills.

Demonstrated facility with casework and counselling/advising, preferably in a University setting.

Must have strong project and program management skills.

Demonstrated skills working with diverse students and student groups.

Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Demonstrated problem-solving, leadership, supervisory and conflict resolution skills

Ability to lead and motivate student staff.

Ability to chair meetings.

Must be able to work independently and as part of a diverse team, as well as work irregular hours in an unpredictable and often stressful environment.

Experience with ROSI or related systems.

Must be certified in standard First Aid and CPR.

Ability to interpret and apply a constantly changing set of policies and principles with a high level of attention to detail.


OTHER:

Strong understanding of a student-centered, developmental, multicultural sensitive approach.

Comfortable working in an unpredictable and sometimes stressful environment both independently and as part of a team of diverse individuals.

Ability to meet short timelines consistently and manage a set of competing priorities.

Ability to make quick, sound judgments under pressure.

Must have a high level of accuracy, with the ability to pay attention to detail, problem solve with a proactive solutions focus.

Demonstrable commitment to the enhancement of the student experience in Residence through the on-going development of programs, policies and staff improvement initiatives.

Experience with critical intervention and the exercising of triage strongly preferred.

Must have an interest in students who come from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Ability to exercise creativity in developing and improving programs, practices and procedures and staff development.

Knowledge of confidentiality issues affecting students and university activities.

Must be able to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend work and on-call emergency response.

Must be willing and able to live on campus.
