Scope of work:

Innu Inuit Redpath Limited Partnership (IIR) will be the primary contractor on an underground mine infrastructure construction project located on the east coast of Labrador, approximately 350 km north of Goose Bay. Mine infrastructure requirements include the following for both the Reid Brook & Eastern Deeps Mines: ore sizing & conveyor systems, mine dewatering systems, ventilation control installations, paste backfill reticulation systems, underground maintenance, fuel/lube & wash bays, refuge stations, and underground electrical power distribution.

Future mining from the two separate, underground deposits will extend the life of this operation for at least another decade. Both deposits contain Nickel, Copper & Cobalt; 2.54 million tons will be mined annually at peak production.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic and the Underground Superintendent, the primary role of the Mechanic is to perform preventive maintenance and repairs to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air-operated equipment. This includes mobile equipment, generators, compressors, drills, small tools and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature.

Duties and Responsibilities:
      • Perform diagnostic testing to identify problems and determine the solution to solve the problem
      • Adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components or systems.
      • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer specifications.
      • Identify unsafe conditions in underground headings - a high level of alertness required
      • Train and mentor new employees and apprentices.

      • Responsible for using and maintaining all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labelling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
    • Must be red seal certified heavy-duty equipment technician
    • Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner
    • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Service Type Common Core (or other provincial equivalents)
    • Three years of experience in an underground mining environment
    • Five years of experience completing maintenance and repairs to underground mining equipment
    • Experience reading and understanding blueprints
    • Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to use an MSDS sheet effectively.

Health and Safety:
    • Have the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
    • Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to the supervisor
    • Responsible for using and maintaining all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labelling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
    • Ensure permits are in place and lock 0ut tag out procedures are followed
    • Responsible for ensuring proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
    • Ensure that workers are qualified and capable of safely performing the assigned work
    • Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to use an MSDS sheet effectively.
    • Work in accordance with local legislation
