Schedule Monday to Friday, 7 hours per day, 35 hours per week, 10 months of the

year (school schedule)

Location: Donald Young School (1) & Mine Centre School (1)

Rate of Pay: $30.87 - $36.32 per hour plus vacation pay

Reports to: Reports dually to the Indigenous Education

POSITION PURPOSE

The Youth Outreach Worker is a key member of the School Support Services team and the
School(s) at which they are assigned. They are responsible for working with students to help with
attendance and learning involvement. This person works with families and students to achieve
goals. This includes getting to know student needs, and providing information regarding relevant
programs, services and opportunities. Supporting positive participation in the school. The Youth
Outreach Worker conducts planning activities to foster a positive school-family-student
relationship. Responsible for incorporating land-based learning into the school. Additionally, the
Youth Outreach Worker will work as a team with all school staff.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • 2-yr College diploma in a relevant area of study (e.g. Social Services Worker)
  • 1-3 years related practical experience
  • Experience working in a school setting is an asset
  • Understanding of the challenges that students face
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and legislation affecting children/youth
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture, values and history
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong team work skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to use computers

SUPPORTIVE STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS

  • Based upon individual needs, works with students to create a positive working
relationship within the school and classroom.
  • Supports students in finding strategies for dealing with challenges such as anxiety at
school, schoolwork completion, and social skills.
  • Works as part of the school team in supporting student’s needs.
  • Participates in activities of the student’s choice to build positive relationships and
introduce independence skills.
  • Supports students with the development of social skills such as empathy, compassion,

sportsmanship, etc.

LAND-BASED LEARNING

  • Works with Indigenous Leaders and community partners to offer a wide range of unique
land-based opportunities for students.


EXTRA-CURRICULAR ENGAGEMENT

  • Plans, organizes, and delivers various extra-curricular activities such as but not limited to
clubs & sports.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

  • Participates in various activities to engage families with the school (e.g. cooking; bingo).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT / TRAINING

  • Provides content for the school/board newsletters, which highlights successes of the
program.

WORKING CONDITIONS
