Overview:

As a member of the health care team, the Personal Support Worker provides/supports residents’ personal care and COMPLIES WITH FACILITY POLICIES & PROCEDURES WHILE CARRYING OUT THE FOLLOWING PRINICPAL RESPONSIBILITIES.

Qualifications:

Successful completion of a Personal Support Worker course conducted by a Community College or other recognized institute of learning. Ability to understand both written and verbal instructions. Good interpersonal skills. To determine suitability for this position applicant’s attendance and job performance will be reviewed.

Duties:

  • Assists in admission, transfer and discharge/death of residents
  • Assists in the process of identification of residents’ personal clothing/glasses/dentures.
  • Strips and makes beds.
  • Maintains residents’ rooms as clean and tidy, including personal belongings in wardrobe and bureau.
  • Porters and escorts residents as needed.
  • Removes soiled linen and garbage from nursing unit and delivers to appropriate location. Exchanges linen care for clean one.
  • Keep service areas clean, i.e. utility room and linen room etc.
  • Cleans equipment, including bed pans, commode chairs, geriatric trays, wheelchairs and any other equipment required for residents’ care.
  • Assists in serving meals and nourishments, feeds residents and reports/records residents’ appetite accurately.
  • Adheres to residents’ care plans.
  • Uses proper body mechanics with positioning, turning residents in bed and transferring by using single-person, two-person transfer and mechanical lifts.
  • Provides personal hygiene to residents.
  • Provides bed/tub baths and showers and additional skin care as identified on the care plan or directed by registered staff.
  • Assists residents with toileting – bed pan, condom catheter, suppositories and colostomy care.
  • Cares for incontinent resident – perineal care and continent supply changes.
  • Collects specimens as directed.
  • Cares for residents using oxygen concentrators/tanks.
  • Weighs residents and records on appropriate form.
  • Explains smoking rules to residents and discusses any concern relating to residents’ safety to registered staff.
  • Provides active and passive range of motion exercises, body mechanics and body alignment to promote resident health and comfort.
  • Applies, removes and cares for eye glasses, dentures, hearing aids, other, i.e. artificial eye.
  • Initiates first aid measures and calls a registered staff for assessment.
  • Assists residents with ambulation through the use of walkers, canes and wheelchairs.
  • Observes, reports and records on appropriate worksheets, care provided and any incidents, accidents of changes in condition and behaviors to the nurse in charge.
  • Cooperates with other departments while performing daily duties.
  • Attends in-services and education programs as assigned.
  • Orientates new staff and assists with student training. Assigns work, monitors quality, performance issues of students, volunteers and new staff.
  • Attend all Mandatory In Services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
