Main Purpose and Function

There is a vacancy for a Planning Assistant III in the Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability Department – Community Planning Division. This position would provide technical and professional support to teams undertaking policy development, program planning, training and implementation for reconciliation, redress and equity in the Department of Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This Planning Assistant is responsible for performing technical work focusing on:

  • Conducting studies and analysis related to reconciliation, redress and equity programs,
  • Preparing and supporting public meetings, consultation and open houses.
  • Technical work associated with planning for reconciliation, redress and equity programs, including responding to development and rezoning enquiries and, general enquiries from the public.
  • Providing support for implementation of reconciliation, redress and equity programs.

Many of the duties associated with this position will involve support to planning professionals who are undertaking various programs, policies and applications. Duties will include:

  • Conducting surveys, research and analysis tasks.
  • Preparing graphics work.
  • Assisting with policy development, Council Reports, presentation boards and materials.
  • Organizing public consultation processes and meetings (book venues, advertise events, write bulletins, press releases, newsletters; as well as preparing meeting notes, mailing lists, presentations and informational graphics).
  • Preparing mailing lists, notifications and other materials for open houses and public hearings.
  • Facilitating small group discussions, receiving and summarizing public comments, and maintaining web pages and social media accounts.
  • Performing other related duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of twelfth school grade or equivalent in Technical or Vocational school supplemented or including courses in drafting or graphics, along with Planning Assistant II experience or technical work experience of a planning nature. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • University degree in Planning would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Relevant lived experience combined with a broad perspective lens on supporting best practices in advancing equity, reconciliation, redress and decolonization is preferred.
  • Knowledge of community development and capacity building approaches, in particular those involving equity-denied communities is an asset.
  • Should have the ability to work independently and participate successfully on teams, and to work with the public,
  • Completion of assignments using sound professional techniques and judgment.
  • Proven ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g. prioritize tasks, communicate expected timeframes for the delivery of items with staff and request assistance when needed).
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated sound research and analytical abilities and experience, and an aptitude in the technical aspects of planning work.
  • Working knowledge of zoning and land-use planning and regulations, land development economics, public space planning, and urban design principles is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of Sketch Up (3D Software), MapInfo, Microsoft Office Suite and graphics programs with strong graphic skills (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is required.
  • Familiarity with rezoning processes is an asset.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.
