Duration: Three (3) years. This is subject to a probationary period of 3 months and a satisfactory performance review following the first year.

Stipend: $54,000 annually, plus supplemental health benefits and a research stipend.

The Wilson Institute for Canadian History at McMaster University is inviting applications for a three-year postdoctoral position in history education. The postdoctoral fellow will be working with Thinking Historically for Canada’s Future (www.thinking-historically.ca), which is a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) funded national Partnership Grant. This is the largest research partnership focused on K-12 history education in Canada and a significant research, networking, and mentorship opportunity for new scholars.

The postdoctoral position will support the research and administration of studies related to curriculum and resources for K-12 history education across Canada, with a particular focus on issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.

Applicants will have a PhD in Education, History, or related discipline. Applicants will have an excellent academic record for their career stage, including a beginning record of publications, conference presentations, and research agenda aligned with the position. Candidates who identify as being from a marginalized group/groups are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, completing research sub-projects, coordinating data management plans, training research assistants, and managing knowledge dissemination activities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to co-author publications, co-present on project research and engage in other related scholarly activities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue their own research plans in alignment with the project as well.

Dr. Maxime Dagenais at McMaster University, Dr. Kristina R. Llewellyn at University of Waterloo and Dr. Penney Clark at the University of British Columbia will co-mentor the candidate. The candidate may hold the position remotely but may need to visit the McMaster, Waterloo, or UBC campus during the tenure of the position. The candidate will have extensive opportunities to network with project co-investigators, collaborators, and partner organizations from across Canada.

The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and skills in:

  • Knowledge of the field of K-12 history education in Canada, including familiarity with concepts related to the project’s themes of historical thinking, civic engagement, and/or Indigenous knowledges.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and in communication with content and subject-matter experts.
  • Willingness to engage in professional learning as required for the position.
  • Strong organizational, writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Additional knowledge and skills in the following are not mandatory, but are an asset:

  • General knowledge of research principles and practices for equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
  • General knowledge of and experience with mixed methods research processes, including, but not limited to, surveys, interviews, or discourse analysis.
  • Ability to read and/or write and speak in French and/or an Indigenous language.
