We are currently looking for a Power Plant Technician II (Shift) (Electrical & Instrumentation Tech.) to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for routine electrical and instrumentation maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work of electrical and control equipment throughout the generating station.

As a Power Plant Technician II (Shift) (Instrumentation & Electrical Technician):

  • Under the direction of the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for ensuring the plant operates safely, as prescribed in NSPI Operating Practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations, and within the environmental stipulations prescribed in the Environmental Operating Permit.
  • You will also be responsible for trouble shooting, maintenance, repair, calibration, installation, and commissioning of instrumentation and monitoring equipment & electrical and electronic equipment throughout the generating station.
  • You will develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all instrumentation and control equipment, including distributed control systems, stand-alone PID controllers, field instrumentation devices such as: pressure, temperature, level and flow transmitters, control valves, and electrical & pneumatic actuators.
  • You will develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all electrical equipment, including PLCs, solid state relaying, 4kV motor control, 600V motor control and variable frequency drives.
  • You will be responsible for performing monthly, semi-annual, annual maintenance checks and assisting with equipment overhauls and outages.
  • Stack climbing and repair work on equipment throughout the generating station and participation in specialized environmental testing routines will also be required.
  • You will be responsible for assisting the Control Supervisor with due-diligence activities, data compilation, and reporting related to the plant's Environmental Management System and environmental performance.
  • You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.

What skills will make you successful?

  • Candidates must either be a full-time employee recognized as a PPT II (Electrical and Instrumentation Technician) by Nova Scotia Power OR:
  • certified as a Red Seal Instrumentation Technician and Red Seal Industrial Electrician
  • certified as a Red Seal Instrumentation Technician and possess a Certificate in Electrical / Engineering Technology (Power Discipline) with eligibility for membership with TechNova.
  • At least two years’ experience maintaining electrical and instrumentation equipment as found in a generating station or similar industry would be considered a strong asset.
  • You have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • You must be proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment and software use and programming in an industrial setting.
  • You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, have a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • Applicants will be required to demonstrate acceptable color vision for operation of control monitoring equipment

If no qualified candidates apply, consideration will be given to applicants who are a Red Seal Instrumentation Technician and are willing to enroll in an Electrical Technician apprenticeship program. You will be considered a PPTI until certification as an Electrical Technician is achieved within a specific timeframe.

Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs from floor to waist, 37 lbs. from the floor to shoulder level on an occasional basis and 10 lbs. above shoulder level on a minimal basis.
  • Able to carry 60 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 30 lbs.
  • Able to push and pull with upper and whole body strength on an occasional basis between 50 and 100 lbs.
  • Perform static reaching at waist to shoulder level frequently and from below waist level and from shoulder to overhead on an occasional basis.
  • Perform frequent standing, walking, sitting and neck flexion movements.
  • Perform occasional bending, stooping, extension and neck rotation movements.
  • Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing and neck extension movements on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.
