The Ocean Safety Research Unit (OSRU) of SMS has a thriving research group, focused on scholarship in the areas of survival training for work and transport in cold ocean environments, and that oversees the research-based programs and related research within the School. SMS has now expanded the area of research and education to include public safety and the related graduate research-based programs.


DUTIES
The successful applicant will support the creation and development of a Centre of Excellence in Public Safety, which is to be housed within the School of Maritime Studies at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. The Centre will conduct education and research regarding public safety for areas including the armed forces, search and rescue, corrections, coast guard, and firefighting. The RTP will work closely with the Research Chair (Safety, Security, and Wellness) in developing the Centre, and will report to the Head, School of Maritime Studies. The successful candidate should understand current research trends within the armed forces and public sectors in Canada, have familiarity with relevant stakeholders and funders, and should have a strong background in managing collaborative research projects. They will be responsible for data collection and analysis.

The successful candidate must demonstrate experience in operationalizing complex research projects across multiple disciplines and sectors. The candidate must be able to speak to successes in facilitating research among diverse partners within large-scale projects and applying research findings to “real world” issues.


QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree with a focus on collaborative research. 5-7 years of related professional experience. Experience in establishing processes and procedures to support large scale mixed methods research projects. Experience liaising with leadership committees and boards of directors to establish and implement strategic multi-year work plans. An understanding of how to build an inclusive, collaborative group by identifying and mitigating obstacles that may prevent some stakeholders from fully participating. Highly developed communication skills and experience working in collaborative settings with diverse stakeholders from around the world.

SALARY:
$55,335 – 71,861 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel IV, NAPE Local 7405)
