The S&C Apprentice reports to the S&C Supervisor but will typically be assigned to work under the direct guidance of either an S&C Lead Maintainer or a group of S&C Maintainers and will follow these more senior employees through their schedule rotation, which ensures that the client’s operation is covered 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days a year.

In order to gain proper familiarity with the broad range of equipment used by our client and the differences between territories, the successful candidate will rotate between Metrolinx’s Guelph Subdivision from Georgetown, Ontario up to Kitchener/Waterloo and Metrolinx’s Oakville Subdivision from downtown Toronto up to Burlington, Ontario.

Permanent employment will be contingent on the candidate passing the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) training, the S&C Apprenticeship Training program and the On-the-Job Training.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a company-issued Technical Aptitude Test
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks (including lifting and moving loads of approximately 50 lbs)
  • Proficient and comfortable with climbing a signal structure wearing a fall-arrest harness
  • Valid driver’s licence required
  • Ability to follow company procedures and maintain a cordial relationship with clients
  • Prior railway experience, especially in signals and communications or track is an asset
  • College diploma in a related technical field (ex: telecommunications, electronics, etc.) is an asset
  • Prior troubleshooting and root cause analysis experience is an asset

The Signals and Communications (S&C) Apprentice is a candidate that has prior experience in similar technical fields and shows a strong aptitude for understanding basic electrical concepts and electro-mechanical systems, in addition to showing good ability for data analysis and solving mathematic problems. In addition to the technical aptitude, the S&C Apprentice must demonstrate good interpersonal skills, and a very safety-conscious mindset.
