Duties: Under the general supervision of the Chief Field Inspector.

1. Collect aggregate samples at the production source for granular testing and analysis and qualify aggregate stockpiles for use on CGS contracts and at depots. Liaise with contractors and aggregate producers to resolve deficiencies in product standards.

2. Collect concrete cylinders and asphalt samples; perform tests to ensure samples meet specifications.

3. Perform aggregate moisture/density lab proctor tests to obtain maximum density values for field compaction testing evaluations.

4. Qualify contractors’ compaction efforts on road aggregates and asphalt surface using radioactive compaction testing equipment.

5. Assist in the proper care, maintenance and calibrations on all lab testing equipment.

6. Interpret results of tests, keep detailed records and files.

7. Advise the Soils Testing Technician of the status of stockpile construction on the quality and quantity of aggregates during routine pit inspection.

8. May perform duties on a survey crew.

9. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.

10. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry and Biology, plus some further short specialized training courses, such as M.T.C., M.O.E., etc.
  • Up to six (6) months of soils testing experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in the use and operation of soils testing equipment and methods.
  • Excellent use of English; both verbally and in writing.
  • French verbal and written skills an asset.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver’s licence, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage.
