COMPENSATION $42,174.80 to $45,631.59 (NEE 6-9) - subject to education and / or experience or a combination of both.
STATUS 1-full time permanent (35-hours per week)

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation has been dedicated to protecting and understanding the local marine environments since time immemorial and must be a part of building the understanding required to manage these valuable resources effectively. PURPOSE: The purpose of this position is to promote the values of Malahat Nation through collecting environmental data and observing the various industrial, commercial and recreational uses of the Salish Sea. Under the Supervision of the Fisheries Program Lead, and in collaboration with other members of the Malahat Environment team, the successful applicant will assist with technical tasks related to marine resource management. The successful applicant will be responsible for data collection, marine monitoring, safe boating practices, and support cultural and harvest activities. This is a fulltime permanent position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participate in training to obtain vessel operator certifications
  • Participate in monitoring programs such as vessel traffic and species observations, construction activities, biophysical and contaminant water sampling
  • Participate in training and staff meetings as required
  • Perform careful lab work, including using microscopes and non-harmful chemicals
  • Accurately enter data and create digital maps
  • Operate Malahat Nation vehicles and vessels safely in a variety of weather conditions
  • Promote safety while working on commercial vessels
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and excellent organizational abilities
  • Promote teamwork and good work ethic
  • Work efficiently with other programs at Malahat Nation
  • Help create a nurturing learning environment for other members of the team
  • Maintain an open and positive attitude towards Indigenous culture and history
  • Facilitate cultural and harvest activities
  • Editing documents and communications
  • Providing administrative and procurement support services
  • Multi-tasking, working in a fast-paced environment and managing workload with accuracy and attention to detail within deadlines and minimum supervision
  • Coordinating travel for management staff
  • Communicating with and advising staff from various levels
  • Other duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma) or an acceptable combination of related education, training and experience
  • Experience working with a First Nation organization
  • Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous and Coast Salish history and culture required
  • Must possess or undergo training for the following certificates: Small Vessel Operator Proficiency; Restricted Radio Telephone Operator/VHF; Medical Emergency, Swift Water Rescue, and Marine First Aid certificates
  • First Aid certification is beneficial
  • Class 5 Driver’s License is beneficial
  • Successful Criminal Record Check (CRC) required
  • Familiarity with Provincial and Federal laws, regulations, and policies related to the environment, land, and natural resource management beneficial
  • Effective December 3, 2021 full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Malahat Nation. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment

  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, email and using handheld devices
