Support Staff Full-time New Position

The School of Engineering and Technology is searching for a qualified candidate to fill the role of Technologist, Packaging. Our successful candidate provides assistance to faculty by managing the use of facilities, supporting established learning objectives, demonstrating skills to students, and completing remedial instructions for those students who require further assistance in mastering the practical skills. They will also be responsible for the set-up, operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of equipment. The successful candidate provides technical support in matters of a complex nature; requires a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization, and experience. In addition, they will assist in ordering and maintaining inventory to meet program needs.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus five days/week.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates practical skills and the safe use of equipment
  • Provides remedial instruction to those students requiring further assistance in mastering required practical skills
  • Provides guidance to students toward the successful completion of their lab assignments and projects
  • Delivers feedback toward the evaluation of student performance in the lab in conjunction with faculty assignment/project requirements
  • Maintains lab facilities and equipment, including repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment or sub-contracting the repairs of equipment
  • Evaluates and maintains inventory management system of equipment, equipment manuals, and supplies, prepares purchase requisitions for lab supplies and machine parts
  • Collaborates with Health and Safety department by providing documentation and reports, updating lab equipment binders, documenting inventory of supplies and equipment, maintenance repair, shipping, and assessment of hazardous goods
  • Works closely with the Purchasing department to ensure supplies and equipment are ordered according to college policies, provides monthly credit card documentation for approval by the Chair
  • Participates in required health and safety, college, and OEM training as required
  • Collaborates with other technologists to ensure consistency within shops and labs across the applicable campuses
  • Participates in other projects/duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Two-year Diploma/Degree in Packaging Technology or a related field, or Certificate of Qualification as 433A Industrial Maintenance Mechanic
  • Five years of industrial experience with at least two years in the Packaging or related sector; experience in a laboratory setting is an asset
  • Must be flexible and organized
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to explain ideas and concepts thoroughly to students
  • Good computer skills
  • Preference given to candidates with previous lab experience that is related to the packaging industry
  • Preference given to candidates with a Certified Packaging Professional
  • Strong math and science skills
