The Tourism Visitor Information Counsellor (TVIC) is the important link between the visitor and tourism industry product and service providers. The main activities of a Tourism Visitor Information Counsellor include identifying a visitor’s needs, offering information and selling tourism products and services. This role is an ambassador to tourism in our province – an extremely important role having a direct impact on the visitor’s impression of BC, encouraging the purchase of tourism products and services, longer stays and travel in all regions of the province.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

Key Duties:

The employee will provide impartial and objective information and advice on the Thompson Okanagan Region in person and on the phone and will serve as the tourism product knowledge expert. Specific duties include:

  • Must ensure that all visitors to the Tourism Inspiration Centre are served with pride, professionalism, and efficiency.
  • Answer visitor inquiries, problems & complaints on the phone, email and in person to the best of their ability.
  • Research relevant community information that may be of interest to visitors.
  • Keep brochure and merchandise racks & storage organized and well-filled.
  • Keep accurate statistics regarding visitors and submit to Destination BC Visitor Services daily.
  • Keep Visitor Inspiration Centre well-stocked with information pertaining to the tourism industry.
  • Must be well informed and promote special events happening in the region.
  • Promote local tourism products, services and events and provide assistance with accommodation and tour reservations.
  • Post current information of interest to the visitor on Inspiration Visitor Centre social media accounts (Facebook/Twitter).
  • Maintain a "peak period" accommodation vacancy registry. i.e., Concert weekend.
  • Must participate in familiarization tours of the regional destinations and products and work with industry partners.
  • Develop sales techniques and handle cash transactions for merchandise in the Centre.
  • Assist with the opening/closing duties of the Tourism Inspiration Centre, including cash-out and balance of float, and inventoried items for sale.
  • Keep the Info Centre clean, including the facilities and the parking lot.

Qualifications

  • Good working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft Office, internet search engines and social media.
  • Availability for weekends and/or statutory holidays is mandatory.
  • Experience with retail sales and POS systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to own transportation is mandatory (no transit in area).
  • First aid training an asset.
  • Knowledge of a second language an asset.

Relationships & Supervision

  • Works alongside other TVIC’s and staff.
  • Reports to the Tourism Inspiration Centre Supervisor and Manager.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Increase conversion rate for retail sales, encouraging purchases and promoting local products.
  • Assist to reduce percentage of theft and loss of inventory items.
  • Accurately input retail transactions to reduce inventory errors.
  • Reduce response time with visitor inquiries, providing accurate and relative information.
  • Increase customer satisfaction measured through Google Reviews.

  • Show an interest in developing a thorough understanding of First Nations culture, storytelling, and history to ensure it is shared to visitors in a respectful and qualified way.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary
Contract length: 4.5 months

Salary: $17.00 per hour

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

  • Central Okanagan Rd Rural, BC V0H 1X2: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
