The Role
:

Under general supervision, performs manual and equipment operating duties in the performance of various Public Works construction, maintenance or operational functions.


Responsibilities
:

  • Performs water quality and system tests (i.e. chlorine residual, pH, pressure and flow tests) and takes corrective action (i.e. notify supervisor and flush) as directed.
  • Performs hand excavation, backfilling and restoration works.
  • Performs concrete work, brickwork and pipe laying.
  • Cleans sewer mains, laterals and manholes of debris and sediment.
  • Maintains, operates and inspects water distribution and wastewater collection system assets.
  • Assists in construction related activities and watermain tapping service.
  • Assists in sewer main rodding service and CCTV inspection service.
  • Assists in major hydrant repair and overhaul service.
  • Performs routine maintenance, inspection and minor repairs to water and wastewater infrastructure and assists in major construction repairs.
  • Ensures all work performed in compliance with relevant standards, legislation and regulations.
  • Completes forms, records and reports according to approved procedures and methods (i.e. work order, inspection form, chain of custody form, etc.).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned including duties of lower rated classifications where qualified.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Minimum acceptable MOECC certification is Water Distribution Operator-In-Training (OIT) and Wastewater Collection Operator-In-Training (OIT) or Wastewater Collection and Treatment (OIT's) for Wastewater Treatment position.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of manual and power equipment
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Capable of accurately completing work forms and reports
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers
  • Must have a working knowledge of applicable regulation as it applies to compliance (i.e. Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.)
  • Must successfully complete regulatory training (i.e. Preventing Water Borne Illness, Confined Space Training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Trenching and Shoring, etc.)
  • Meter Installers Certificate preferred
  • Physically able to perform requirements of the job
  • Possess a Class “GZ” license in good standing with preference for “DZ”.
  • Minimum 3 months job related experience.

Preference will be given to qualified candidates who are currently in the CUPE Local 966-Public Works bargaining unit.
