Little Rays Nature Centers is an accredited zoological facility and one of North America’s largest exotic animal rescues, and is home to a number of different reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, and small exotic mammals. It was founded and is owned by the husband and wife team of Paul and Sheri Goulet. Their one-of-a-kind, fun, and interactive approach to Eco-Education has been a hit with children and adults alike since 1995, opening the West Edmonton Mall location in early 2022. In addition to their zoological facilities, Little Ray has active Outreach and Educational Programs.

THE POSITION:

The foundation of our organization is the one-on-one interaction between the staff, the animals and the public. This positive, inspiring, and unique experience is the crux of successful In-Zoo and Outreach programming. All of our staff are expected to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner, facilitate safe interaction with our animals, and promote our messaging relating to responsible pet ownership and conservation. Our talented team of Wildlife Educators are responsible for a wide variety of tasks while working closely alongside the Animal Care Manager.

Part- Time Wildlife Educators will be tasked with:

  • Presenting educational and entertaining programs to all ages of members of the public.
  • Performing educational programming for schools, birthdays, etc.
  • Safe handling a number of different species of exotic animals, including snakes, frogs, and tarantulas.
  • Communicating animal care needs or concerns with the Animal Care team.
  • Assisting with cleaning and maintenance tasks as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Zoo Director or Animal Care Manager.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds regularly and able do a full day of physical labour.
  • Must be ready to hustle – work hard and efficiently.
  • Must be able to work with a large team of people in an amicable manner.
  • Must be able to understand and follow all company policies including but not limited to: animal handling, welfare, public messaging, code of conduct, public safety, and infection control.
  • Must be able to handle a wide variety of animals safely, conscientiously, and according to company policies – we will offer training on this where needed.
  • Must want to and be able to engage with the public in a warm, welcoming, positive, and professional manner.
  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must enjoy working with all ages.
  • Must possess or pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

o First Aid and CPR;

o Experience in customer service;

o Excellent oral communication skills;

o The ability to present information about nature and nature conservation in an entertaining and educational manner;

o A keen interest in natural history;

o A background in any of the following is an additional asset: presenting nature-based education programs; customer service; physical labour.

*Previous experience handling animals, working at zoological institutions, or other related work an asset, but not required. Aptitude with public speaking and experience working with children are also assets, but not required.*

Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 15-20 per week

Salary: $15.00-$17.00 per hour
