Destination Canada is looking for a Writing and Editing Specialist to join our team in Vancouver as we inspire travellers to explore Canada.

This role shares the love of Canada by telling the country’s most compelling stories across channels. Supporting Destination Canada’s Business Events and Marketing teams, this role will provide exceptional written content and editing support.

Destination Canada strives to be an agile organization that is responsive to a fast-paced industry, and this position will require the skills and personal attributes to support this objective.

Note: The successful candidate will be working under Destination Canada’s Hybrid Working Model. This model requires all employees to work 2-3 days/week in the Vancouver office. The remainder of the work week can be spent working from a home office.

DUTIES: Under the guidance of the Senior Manager, Global Owned Media, the Writing and Editing Specialist is responsible for ensuring content produced for these teams, as well as the broader organization, is strategic, accurate and compelling.

Core responsibilities include:

Providing high quality writing and editing:

  • Developing effective copy for advertisements, collateral, social channels, ghost-written articles/interviews, websites, speeches, long- and short-form articles and more across multiple platforms for both consumer and business events audiences
  • Providing exemplary written content for the Business Events team, and the Marketing team

Implementing stakeholder goals, strategy and brand.

  • Liaising with multiple stakeholders and business units to understand their content needs
  • Sharing expertise around incentive travel and business events
  • Integrating key messages from various strategies, including Destination Canada’s brand strategy, into copy seamlessly

Creating data-driven content.

  • Integrating data meaningfully to create strategic story ideas
  • Working within a testing culture to leverage learnings to develop strong content concepts and resulting copy
  • Understanding the impact of copy in a testing environment
  • Considering SEO when developing copy and embedding key phrases seamlessly

Essential Qualifications

EDUCATION: University degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Publishing or another field directly related to the position, or combination of education, training and experience acceptable to Destination Canada.

EXPERIENCE: When applying, the candidate must clearly demonstrate in writing how they meet the following experience criteria:

  • A minimum of 5 years of full-time or equivalent experience writing, editing and developing content in a professional capacity
  • Certificate or designation in editing and/or professional/technical writing preferred
  • At least two years’ experience working using CP style and implementing a style guide
  • Experience in a fast-paced editorial environment focused on written deliverables for a variety of channels (ex. print, web, video, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in a media/journalism editorial environment, working with and developing editorial guidelines and managing content providers
  • Previous work history in an international marketing communications environment, an asset
  • Experience with publishing design, an asset

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of best practices for creating content and editing across all media
  • Deep understanding of Project Management.
  • Working knowledge of Wrike and Smartsheet, Keyword Planner and other tools an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of SEO writing, and online publishing best practices
  • Knowledge of journalism research methods, best practices, ethics and industry standards
  • Established understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants
  • Demonstrated mastery of communications trends and theory
  • Knowledge of quality control standards, policies and guidelines for traditional and web content publication, branding and presentation
  • In-depth knowledge of consultation methods and techniques including horizontal collaboration
  • Knowledge of Canadian tourism and business events products, an asset
  • Knowledge of French, an asset

  • Writing skills for creative and complex texts with the ability to write timely, relevant, engaging long- and short-form copy and content
