Academic English Tutor Job at KEY Education

We are looking for an experienced Tutor or Teacher with a background in English Literature and/or writing to work with a high school student on literary analysis, essays, and creative writing to support school expectations and beyond. We believe that a strong foundation through education will set students on the right path to success. We need a like-minded individual to join our team to work with students in person at our office after school.

With our team of industry experts who are former independent school staff members, our students have gained admission to highly-selective independent schools including:


  • Canada: Crofton House, York House, Collingwood, Mulgrave, Stratford Hall, Southridge, Southpointe Academy, St. George’s, St. John’s, Shawnigan Lake School, and St. Michaels University School.
  • United States: Phillips Exeter Academy, Berkshire, The Episcopal School, Harker, Tilton, Storm King, and Ethel Walker.
  • United Kingdom: Elstree, Ludgrove, Sandroyd, and Summer Fields.

Job types: Part-time

Compensation:

$30 hourly

Responsibilities:

  • Familiarity with BC English Curriculum and the ability to work with secondary students to meet learning expectations.
  • Contributes to student learning and advancement in academic English, inspiring a passion for developing creative and non-creative writing.
  • Maintains a growth mindset towards student progress and the student's personal and academic development.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of integrity and agency; holds themselves accountable for learning outcomes and advocates for their students
  • Facilitates problem-solving, fosters critical thinking skills, and shows a high degree of creative application in the implementation of the curriculum.
  • Designs and applies learning activities that follow a coherent sequence, are aligned to appropriate learning goals, and engage students in high-level cognitive activity.
  • Invests in the students’ well-being and safety, physically and emotionally.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, Creative Writing, Education, or related field, preferably from a US, Canadian, or UK university, or a comparable qualification.
  • An education degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field of teaching is considered an asset.
  • Prior teaching and/or tutoring experience is an asset.

  • Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate for students at the respective grade level.
  • Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.
  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet expectations efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage individuals or small groups of students in a learning environment; and communicate effectively with students, parents, and others as needed
  • Working familiarity with assistive technologies; internet and email systems; and word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software.
  • Familiarity with technology and the use of technology in the classroom
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without sponsorship.
