Job Summary

The Accountant, Customs Brokerage is responsible for the day-to-day billing and collections of CN’s Canadian Brokerage operations in order to meet the organizations and its customer service commitments. The role is critical to ensuring that Goods and Service Tax (GST) and duty liabilities are processed to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) by the due date to avoid penalties and ensure GST self-direct customers have the required details to make their payments on time. The position is responsible for ensuring Rail, Brokerage, Canadian National Trucking Limited (CNTL) and CN Worldwide (CNWW) are compliant with Canada Customs system updates as mandated by the CBSA.

Main Responsibilities

Billings and Collections

  • Ensure accurate invoicing of eManifest, Remanifest, Bonds, and miscellaneous billing on a timely basis
  • Responsible for Annual Billing of brokerage fees and total cash collections including non-revenue
  • Review and process cash collections on a timely basis
  • Handle, review, and monitor the accounts receivable and follow up with customer regarding payments and additional information that may be required to obtain payment

Legal Requirements

  • Work with Descartes and Canada Customs on CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) project to ensure the system is up to date with the mandated requirements and information flow is accurate
  • Perform daily monitoring of Canada Customs Interactions ARL Accounts Receivable Ledger downloads
  • Issue GST self-direct ARL statements and follow up with Accounts Payable
  • Ensure accurate payment to Canada Custom is processed on time each month
  • Complete the reconciliation of the GST and Duty subledger accounts

Accounting

  • Assist with month end tasks and ad hoc reconciliations
  • Act as vacation relief back up for CNCB Accounts Payable
  • Assist with the monthly review of data integrity reports
  • Monitor client credit limits, access customer credit risk, and make necessary modifications

Operations

  • Set up new clients and bill codes
  • Perform client clean up and validity checks
  • Prepare operational metric reports

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

Experience

Billings, Collections and Customs Brokerage

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in billing, collections, and custom brokerage

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce
  • Working toward a Chartered Public Accountant (CPA) or some Chartered Accountant certification
  • Business Administration Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) designation*
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
