Over the course of the summer, the Camp Leaders will assist professional Artist Educators in delivering camp programming and activities for students ages 4-18 years. HCA's summer camp program enrolls between 250-300 students annually. Camp Leaders will gain experience working with children and youth, parents and professional arts educators. A critical aspect of this position will be the proven ability to build positive relationships with the children, and create a positive, fun, and safe camp experience. If you have experience working with children and are passionate about arts, music and dance this position will be ideal for you.

Camp Leaders Responsibilities:

  • observe and assist the Artist Educator in teaching camp programs
  • structure and develop lessons in consultation with the Artist Educator
  • support a physically and emotionally safe space for campers free of discrimination, to promote an overall positive camp experience
  • assist in the creation and execution of presentations at the end of each session
  • assist in the supervision of campers during regular camp hours and extended care programs
  • develop and facilitate extended care activities for campers in conjunction with HCA Administration and volunteers
  • supervise campers during washroom, snack and lunch breaks
  • support and maintain positive relationships with volunteers
  • work closely with the Camp Coordinator and HCA Administration to ensure that all health and safety protocols are observed by all students and volunteers
  • attend initial orientation and regular training to support the position, including a weekly staff teachers meeting where the Camp Leaders will be required to contribute feedback, camp evaluations and contribute to recommendations for improvement and efficiencies when necessary
  • assist the Camp Coordinator in maintaining communication between HCA Administration, Summer Camp Staff, and volunteers, and campers and their families
  • complete written, weekly reports on attendance, behavior management strategies and camper feedback,
  • assist in maintaining costumes, props, instruments, and visual arts supplies related to camp programs.

Camp Leaders Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with children is required
  • Prior experience in working/ volunteering for summer camps is an asset.
  • Highly effective communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills are required in working with children, volunteers, instructors and staff.
  • A collaborative, team-building spirit, seeking and celebrating the contribution of others.
  • High level of responsibility and accountability, with strong leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate responsible, ethical and professional conduct

This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program provided by Service Canada.

  • Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:
  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulation.
