Job Summary
Athletics and Recreation takes a holistic approach to enhancing the Dalhousie experience by creating and sharing ways to engage and connect students through physical activity and wellness, to contribute to student success.Reporting to the Manager, Campus & Community Recreation, the Campus Recreation Assistant is tasked with supporting the operations, risk management and delivery of recreational programs and services in the Dalplex, including the design and delivery of climbing programs and youth camps, and assisting with the administration of recreational sport clubs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver recreational programs and camps offered to campus and community members. Manage registrations, payments, refunds, equipment, supplies and bookings. Promote and ensure the health and safety of staff and participants. Enter, update and report on program and facility data.
  • Work collaboratively with the Campus Recreation Coordinator to ensure programming aligns with departmental, and University mission, vision, values, and that programs are conducted in a professional and safe environment. Assist with updating risk mitigation, and policy and procedure manuals.
  • Recruit, schedule and train casual staff while providing staff with tools, resources and performance reviews for successful program delivery. Oversee schedules and assign tasks.
  • Monitor and inspect facility, sport, and recreational equipment in accordance with industry standards. Oversee the indoor climbing facilities including route setting, maintenance plan, wall and equipment safety inspections. Purchase new equipment as required.
  • Assist with the development of the annual budget for recreation & wellness programming. Monitor program revenue and expenses, and adjust activities to achieve budget projections.
  • Work collaboratively with the department’s communication and marketing team to ensure accurate information is published to clients.

Note
The incumbent will be required occasionally to work evening and week-end shifts. Scheduling and compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

Required Qualifications
  • Diploma in Recreation Management plus approximately two to three years relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • High Five and Standard First Aid certification.
  • Experience in program coordination and design.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong client service, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Proven safety record and commitment to safety
  • Regular physical effort including lifting and carrying equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Climbing Wall Instruction (CWI) certification or completion within first six months of employment.

Assets
  • Undergraduate degree in Recreation Management.
  • Experience and/or training in rock climbing.
