Applications are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate must currently hold an academic appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor and be eligible to hold a clinical appointment at a hospital fully-affiliated with the university. The appointment as Chair will be for a 5-year term effective January 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter, renewable for a second term following a favourable review.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is the largest and most diverse academic obstetrical and gynaecological department in Canada with educational, research and tertiary care programs recognized worldwide. The research-intensive Department is a leader in women’s health on an international scale. The Department comprises over 320 distinguished clinicians, clinician researchers, clinician scientists and basic scientists distributed across six fully-affiliated academic hospitals and nine community-affiliated hospitals and healthcare facilities serving a diverse population of over 6 million people.

The Department offers education to over 250 undergraduate students and over 60 residents in obstetrics and gynaecology. It is home to more than 70 clinical fellows and subspecialty residents in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada accredited subspecialities of gynaecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive endocrinology and infertility, together with fellowships in complex obstetric surgery, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, mature women’s health, vulvo-vaginal health, minimally-invasive surgery, reconstructive surgery and urogynaecology and pelvic floor disorders. The Department enjoys global multi-level partnerships, including with Moi University in Western Kenya. The Department is strongly committed to reproductive sciences, forming a city-wide division in 2022, and jointly delivers an MSHc in Clinical Embryology with the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology.

In addition to being a scholar, experienced clinician, educator and innovator, the successful candidate must be an effective communicator with a track record of collaborative and inclusive leadership. The candidate must demonstrate a deep understanding and track record of multidisciplinary collaboration. To lead a department distributed across many affiliated hospitals, the Chair will bring a record of excellence in research, creative professional activity and education, and possess outstanding leadership, management and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and empathy-informed problem solving are necessary to cultivate collaborative relationships in the public and private sectors. Effective strategies are required to build and sustain partnerships locally, nationally and internationally.

The Chair will bring an inclusive vision and have demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective environments. The Chair will have knowledge and an understanding of the diversity of trainees, faculty and the communities in the Greater Toronto Area, and will be deeply committed to implementing the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity and accessibility (EDIIA) and professional values—in teaching, mentorship, research collaborations, faculty development, alumni engagement and in developing a future vision for the Department. The Chair will oversee the promotion and implementation of strategic priorities; recruitment, development and retention of faculty; collaborations with internal and external partners; and education and research programs in the geographically-dispersed department. Experience in alumni relationship building and successful fundraising will be assets. The successful candidate must have the vision and ability to take the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology to an even higher level of academic achievement and recognition. This achievement and recognition may include nominating and promoting faculty members for regional, provincial, national and international committee participation in women’s reproductive health organizations.

The successful candidate must have a medical degree and the equivalent of a Canadian Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons fellowship in the field of obstetrics and/or gynaecology. They will hold an academic appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. The preferred hospital site for the Chair’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be at one of the Department’s fully-affiliated sites—Sinai Health: Mount Sinai Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children, Unity Health Toronto: St. Michael's Hospital, University Health Network and Women’s College Hospital.

Compensation and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
