APL performed 76 million tests last year, including comprehensive genetic and genomic testing (NGS, microarray) in the areas of constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, newborn screening, and molecular diagnostics for patients across Alberta. Description:

Clinical Cytogeneticist and Molecular Geneticist responsibilities include shared coverage with triage, technical oversight, case interpretation, reporting, and consultation of genetic tests, as well as participation in the laboratory quality assurance program, development and monitoring of laboratory protocols, and other administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide expert laboratory genetic consultation, assist in establishing efficient and effective operation of the laboratory, and advise on resource allocation and translational research. Teaching responsibilities include education of medical students, residents, clinical fellows, as well as staff and students within the laboratory and opportunities for classroom-based teaching at the University of Alberta. Prospects for clinical collaborative research are available and encouraged. It is expected that the successful candidate applies for a University of Alberta Clinical appointment. Clinical laboratory geneticist positions report directly to the respective laboratory lead, who will provide general direction concerning daily responsibilities/activities. Opportunities exist for cross-coverage in the genetics laboratories depending on operational needs, as well as the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a Genetics laboratory (or similar) as a Ph.D. in Genetics or a related field plus certification in Cytogenetics or Molecular Geneticist by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG), the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), or equivalent certification.


Additional Required Qualifications:

This challenging position requires excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills to manage all aspects of a fast-paced laboratory environment. Leadership skills are essential to ensure effective and consistent service delivery to serve the diverse needs of the clinical and academic communities. Candidates must be able to demonstrate effective communication skills, experience in quality assurance, operational efficiency and appropriateness of care. The successful candidate should also possess the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, changing environment that allows for the delivery of quality service in a resource-sensitive environment. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years’ experience and possessing dual certification in molecular/cytogenetics and those with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
