Detailed Overview: The Clinical Psychologist is responsible and accountable for Psychiatric Resident Training services including providing supervision, training and educational consultation to psychiatric residents and psychology students/interns in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT) and psychodynamic supervision, as well as the provision of group and individual therapy, consultations, brief therapy interviews, case reviews, and the evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure the continuing quality of the service. In collaboration with the Coordinator, Group Therapy Services, the Clinical Psychologist provides psychological services and is responsible for the provision of a full range of psychological assessments/tests, interpretations and treatments in New Westminster Mental Health Outpatient Services that include Outpatient Psychiatry, Group Therapy Services at the Royal Columbian Hospital as well as the Community Mental Health Centre. Develops, coordinates and delivers in-services, presentations, psycho-educational and support groups, provides therapy and education services to the Reproductive Mental Health program, and participates in research activities in collaboration with other mental health programs. The Clinical Psychologist provides psychological assessment and diagnosis, and collaborates with physicians and other care providers regarding treatment planning for patients/clients experiencing acute psychiatric signs and symptoms. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Clinical Psychologist also participates in guideline development, quality assurance, program development and evaluation, clinical research and education activities. - Provides a full range of Psychiatric Resident Training services including the provision of supervision, training and educational consultation to psychiatric residents and psychology students/interns, as well as the provision of group and individual therapy, consultations, brief therapy interviews, case reviews, evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure the continuing quality of the service.
- Liaises with the Department of Psychiatry and Fraser Track Residency Training Program Director to coordinate and deliver psychotherapy training for psychiatry residents that includes the delivery of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Axis I presentations, dialectical behavioural therapy and psychodynamic supervision.
- Contributes to the design of interventions to address or reduce mental health challenges and to reinforce patient/client skills and abilities. Provides evidence-based psychological treatments that include CBT/DBT to patients/clients addressing a wide variety of presenting clinical issues.
- Participates in ongoing development and provision of evidence-based group therapy service for adults, using a variety of group therapy approaches including CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapy.
- Provides a full range of psychological services to patients/clients experiencing acute signs and symptoms of mental illness.
- Provides and conducts comprehensive psychological assessments of patient/client functioning to identify and determine underlying disorders, levels of cognitive function and intelligence, factors contributing to functional impairment, mental competency issues and conditions under which specific behaviours occur.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of psychological treatments and provides new recommendations and care as appropriate.
- Accepts referrals from clinical team members and provides consultation to various treatment teams on assessment and treatment issues, which may involve a direct consultation with a formal assessment, co-therapy, or discussing concerns regarding a particular patient/client; leads and coordinates multi-disciplinary service interventions; consults with community professionals and agencies on psychological issues.
- Maintains liaison with referring physicians and other professionals regarding patients/clients' total care; communicates assessment data, interpretations, recommendations, and ongoing care using oral and written reports.
- Provides education and consultation to interdisciplinary team members and their students through activities such as providing didactic rounds, facilitating psychodynamic rounds, providing in-services, and presenting at resident education days.
- Participates in the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, pathways, protocols and decision support tools for psychiatric patients/clients across the hospital and community. Assists with the analysis of data in order to make necessary adjustments to guidelines and pathways.
- Attends and participates in multidisciplinary conferences, medical rounds, and service and department meetings.
- Participates in program evaluation, program planning, and program implementation, and consults to program services and committees as requested.
- Participates in short and long term planning for Mental Health and Substance Use Services and in the establishment and auditing of quality assurance activities.
- Participates in clinical research.
- Supervises psychology and psychiatry students/ interns and residents as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from a recognized and accredited learning institution and current registration with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC). Eligible for faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia Department of Psychiatry to supervise psychiatry residents.
Two years recent, related experience in psychological treatment of mental disorders including experience in training of other mental health providers. Demonstrated experience with psychological interventions, consultation, and interdisciplinary team work with complex clients.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of developmental theories, family and social dynamics, psychological assessment/testing and interpretation, psychological treatment modalities that include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and mental disorders as defined by the DSM V.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective psychological treatment to people with various mental disorders
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to contribute as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to train other mental health providers.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including comprehensive written assessments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to implement guidelines, decision support tools and protocols.
- Demonstrated quality assurance, program evaluation, and research skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, teach and mentor others.
- Ability to plan, implement, organize and prioritize work.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
