Co-op term position – Mechanical/Structural Engineering Job at Millar Western

Millar Western Forest Products Ltd.’s Whitecourt Pulp Division, in Whitecourt, Alberta, is currently offering an 8-12 month co-op work-term position. This position will support the mill’s Engineering team, providing technical engineering skills and course knowledge. This position is expected to begin in May or September 2023.

Responsibilities:

Working under the direction of a supervising engineer, the co-op student will:

  • provide engineering support to maintenance operations;
  • review, recommend, estimate and design modifications/solutions to meet plant requirements and needs;
  • oversee the execution, implementation and closure of projects using management of change (MOC) process;
  • complete level appropriate engineering studies and calculations; and
  • review and update engineering documentation such as P&ID’s, Isometrics and Equipment Files.

Independence to Act and Decision Making:

The co-op student will:

  • work under the direction of a professional engineer who will be responsible for work completed; and
  • complete basic technical reports and analyses, applying engineering program/studies subject matter knowledge, within prescribed processes and/or as directed.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will be mentally challenging with considerable variety in task and responsibility
  • While not physically demanding, work duties require some field time in an operating unit and, at times, will require climbing of stairs, ladders and navigating plant operational areas
  • The co-op student will operation primarily in an office/plant environment with no anticipated travel

Job Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to provide creative, well-considered solutions to challenges
  • Eligible applicants must be working toward a BSc in Mechanical/Structural Engineering and will have completed second/third year studies
  • Applicants must be mechanically inclined and willing to take on new challenges
  • Physical ability to navigate a multi-storey mill environment, sit for long periods of time, and perform many duties
  • Experience working with MS Office suite of applications

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference for students who:

  • are advancing to their third or forth year mechanical or structural engineering studies upon completion of the co-op term
  • possess excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • are able to organize, coordinate and accomplish multiple tasks

Additional considerations:

  • working knowledge of AutoCAD 3D will be an advantage
  • basic knowledge in P&ID use and interpretation, piping flow and hydraulic calculations, pressure relief valve codes and standards, control valve design, pipe-sizing and piping design and simple instrumentation and control loop will be considered an asset
