DESCRIPTION

As a social service provider, within the city of Williams Lake (BC), the Salvation Army provides services to individuals looking to make a positive change in their life. Each day, staff provide compassionate care to William Lake’s marginalized community struggling with poverty, homelessness, and addiction. The Williams Lake Salvation Army is a multifunctioning facility committed to providing a safe space where humans can heal and reconcile their lives. Our intention is to educate, empower & equip guests in our care with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be successful within their personal lives.

Hours:

  • 40 hours per week

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Awareness and compliance with Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Provides personal, practical and morale support; initiates and builds professionally appropriate relationships with the community.
  • Networks with divisional Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of guests and programs when necessary.
  • Where possible and when appropriate, refer community members in need of supports to The Salvation Army resources and supports including Addiction Recovery Programs, Community & Family Services Programs, etc
  • Assists where possible and when appropriate, referring community members to external community resources and supports
  • Through exercising empathetic care, assists individuals to determine an appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal process; facilitates and encourages effective problem-solving behaviours of the guests in need.
  • Train and implement the Salvation Army Pathway of Hope program with support from the Family Services and Outreach Worker Director.
  • Provides emergency assistance services (i.e. food, clothing, etc.) in accordance with policy.
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy; keeps accurate files and statistical records in a secure and policy compliant manner.
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes incident reports.
  • Develop and maintain full resource directory of groups, agencies, and organizations working with vulnerable populations.
  • Assists with the programming, organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the food bank, meal center, drop-in center, when necessary.
  • May develop and conduct strengths building, guest-focused workshops.
  • Represents The Salvation Army to the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintains a guest-focused attitude to support and interact with the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

*NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation.

  • OFA First Aid Level 1/CPR Certificate preferred.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training preferred.

Experience:

  • Will have a minimum of a Social Work Diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Training and experience in Social Services is an asset.
  • Training and experience in Addictions Recovery is an asset.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to relate to and engage marginalized people with a strengths-based perspective, while remaining non-judgmental; in a non-threatening manner, develop a positive, professional relationship resulting in their personal development and independence.
  • Ability to advocate within the community.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to follow both verbal and written instruction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction is essential.
  • Must work co-operatively with others and complete to a satisfactory level all assigned tasks.
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
