Job description

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) has an immediate opening for a Senior Contracts Officer (Contracts Officer II) in our Research Contracts Office. This is a full-time, two-year contract with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will draft, review, negotiate, and administer contracts governing clinical research activities at the OHRI and The Ottawa Hospital. The incumbent will also provide support and guidance to researchers, administrators, and the OHRI’s external clients on the management and execution of contracts and liaise with the Research Ethics Board on contractual aspects of proposed research studies.


  • Can independently review, draft, negotiate and administer a range of research agreements with private industry, funding agencies, and other research institutions (both domestic and foreign). This job will particularly negotiate medium to high-risk agreements with industry and academic partners;
  • Has familiarity with corporate commercial agreements, particularly in areas of healthcare, health research, or technology. Examples of such agreements include clinical trial agreements, data transfer agreements, and collaborative inter-institutional agreements;
  • Has experience working with indemnification, insurance, and other complex contractual terms;
  • Has applied knowledge of relevant privacy laws, such as PHIPA, PIPEDA, and GDPR;
  • Has a demonstrated ability to negotiate and advocate;
  • Has a strong ability to draft and review contracts;

  • Diplomatic with good judgment.

Basic Requirements (Education/Experience):
  • Degree in law (LL.B/J.D.) with three to five years of experience working with contracts and contract negotiation at a research institute, or in private practice, academia, industry, or government.
OR
  • University degree in a relevant field with a minimum of five years of experience drafting and negotiating contracts within a relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in law (LL.B/J.D.)

Contract Details:
Payment is commensurate with skills and experience.
Salary: min: $40.622/h- max: $ 51.628/h
