St. Leonard’s Society of Peterborough provides residential and community services to federally sentenced men aged 18 and over.

The philosophy of Edmison House is to demonstrate to each resident that the community cares and is concerned about his release. We understand that reintegration can be difficult and do our best to assist our residents in every aspect of their release.

The St. Leonard’s Society of Peterborough operates Edmison House, a federal halfway home for men. Edmison House opened in January of 1977.

We have specialized in the area of working with Lifers and have a rich history of developing work skills training programs. There is a total of twenty-four beds including one bed for Unescorted Temporary Absence.

Job Summary

The Cook is to prepare meals according to menu and falls under the

Canadian Food Standards Guide.

An excellent cook must be able to follow instructions in cooking and delivering well-prepared meals. They must be adept in moving around the kitchen area and comfortable in multi-tasking. Experience in using various ingredients and cooking techniques.

The goal is to help preserve and enhance our reputation so we can expand our clientele.

Responsibilities

  • Able to prepare food according to food handlers guidelines.
  • Capable of doing repetitive work.
  • Knowledge of cooking procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the workplace.
  • Label and date food stored and rotate food as needed.
  • Preform opening and closing duties as appropriate.
  • Keep a sanitized and orderly environment in the kitchen.
  • Prepare special meals for those residents who are on diets directed by a physician or as required for religious reasons.
  • Maintain all cooking and storage equipment in a functional and sanitary condition.

Education and Knowledge Requirements

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate with CPR/AED Level C is an asset.
  • Safe Food Handler’s is an asset.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have the ability to obtain

Reliability Status security clearance.

Skill Requirements

  • Ability to work autonomously as well as cooperatively within a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • The ability to demonstrate cultural competence and respect for diversity.
  • Skills in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to withstand long hours of standing, bending and moving around.
