About Our Opportunity


The Data and Planning Librarian is responsible for providing research support, analysis, and recommendations regarding current library trends, policies, and practices as part of the Nova Scotia Provincial Library's services to public libraries in the province. The Data & Planning Librarian is a subject matter expert regarding data analysis and communication and also makes recommendations and drafts policies for review by the NSPL management team and/or library stakeholders.


The Data & Planning Librarian initiates and actively maintains relationships with regional library partners. As the Data & Planning Librarian you also develop inclusive collaborative relationships with vendors, other government departments/agencies, non-profit organizations, connecting them with Nova Scotia’s public libraries.


This position reports to the Client Services Manager.

Primary Accountabilities


  • Conducts research (e.g., environmental/jurisdictional scans) to identify trends and best practices and respond to client requests. Makes recommendations to the NSPL management team and/or library stakeholders that will inform policy and decision making
  • Analyses data to identify trends and makes recommendations to NSPL management team and public library leadership
  • Presents/communicates data and trends to internal and/or external stakeholders in a variety of formats
  • Promotes data literacy (principles and practices) to internal and external contacts
  • Provides project management leadership and support (including consultation and planning) for initiatives developed by province-wide groups and institutions (e.g., SAWG, CORL)) and individual library systems
  • Supervises and manages the performance of the Data Management Technician, and the Client Services team in the absence of Client Services Manager

Qualifications and Experience


To be successful in this role you have a Bachelor’s degree with a post‐graduate degree in Library Science plus 5 years professional library experience.

You have experience using Microsoft programs (Word, Outlook, Excel), library database systems, and internet search engines. You have a high degree of concentration, accuracy, and attention to detail.

Pay Grade: PR 13

Salary Range: $2,469.30 - $3,001.65 Bi-Weekly
