Where does the Design Engineer fit in?

The Design Engineer will provide technical support to internal teams to support awarded programs, engineered solutions, as well as R&D activities. The individual will assist in the development of technical presentations to support the Sales team as well as lead or assist with technical reviews.

What you can expect as our next Design Engineer:

· Develop plastic part design and assemblies that are robust, lightweight, and cost effective. This will involve:

  • generating innovative design concepts
  • detailed 3D CAD modelling and packaging within the vehicle environment (in either NX or CATIA)
  • generating DFMEA’s and Component Technical Specifications
  • iterative design development to meet all performance requirements, incorporate design for manufacturing feedback, material selection
  • creating GD&T drawings of components and assemblies (in either NX or CATIA)
  • initiating design verification testing
  • data review and analysis of performance and durability test results
  • root cause analysis based on test results
  • assisting with hands-on prototype assembly
  • support of troubleshooting for manufacturing production line

· Review and develop part design and performance specifications.

· Maintain and update engineering documentation

· Download data from customer websites and file properly and discuss issues/concerns/requirements with customer movements, part weight, size etc. (CATIA/Solid works)

· Assist with CI (Continuous Improvement) Initiatives for current systems and processes

· Review and develop part and assembly GD&T and tolerance stack-ups

· Coordinate, monitor and track design activities

· Resolve problems and improve manufacturability and serviceability of products working with manufacturing and service personnel.

· Reduce product cost and improve design performance working with other groups on value engineering initiatives.

· Provide technical guidance to management if required.

· Support, investigate, develop and implement new process technologies of major scope

· Manage out source design resources

· Develop and execute DVPR for products and assembly

· Participate in APQP meetings and customer reviews

· CAD modification for DFM and ECN

· Design Poke-yoke and error proofing

· Fixture design as applicable

· Other Task as required

Do you have what is takes to be our next Design Engineer?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or other related)
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in plastics injection moulded part design (within the automotive industry)
  • Experience of using Auto CAD, Pro Engineer, CATIA V5, Unigraphics NX
  • Experience in the Automotive Industry is required
  • Knowledge of technical drawing standards a strong asset, including but not limited to GD&T standards, their application and interpretation
  • Independently determines approach to assigned tasks
  • Strong analytical and numeracy skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • A creative, logical approach for generating new ideas and solutions, with the ability to transition through to part development
  • An excellent grasp of engineering and design principles
  • A knowledge of the qualities of plastics and other materials
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • An understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods
  • Ability to plan and organise through several project stages
  • An awareness of the environmental impact of design ideas
  • Proven successful launches of previous programs (on time & on budget)
  • Ability to think & execute strategically and is results oriented
  • Self-motivated individual with a strong attention to detail
  • Develop long-term strategies for key accounts that align with corporate mandate
  • Strong PC skills, including Microsoft Project
  • Ability to support group to achieve goals within budget
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, providing input and feedback in a helpful manner
  • Ability to effectively communicate organisational goals to team
  • Able to interact well with vendors
  • Able to exercises some latitude and technical judgement in deciding work methods
  • Other duties as assigned
