Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

The primary focus will be leading the Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MEC) directorate within the Design & Engineering Services (DES) department (Engineering Services & Projects pillar). This will include leading a multidisciplinary technical team, achieving business targets for profitability and growth, managing client relationships, and supervising the technical execution of projects to ensure the delivery of high quality, high value services.

A critical component of this role will be leading and motivating staff and/or team members. The successful incumbent must have good interpersonal skills for dealing with clients as well as staff and team members and colleagues. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. In addition, you will support technical mentoring and development of employees. In alignment with growth targets, recruitment of highly qualified personnel and the development of new graduates is a key responsibility of this role.

Nature and Scope:

This Directorate provides expertise in the following functional areas with the main focus on power generating stations and nuclear and conventional structures, systems, equipment and components:
  • Performing technical evaluations of design deliverables.
  • Developing and maintaining design engineering process and procedures (and adherence to this governance).
  • Mechanical engineering, including all aspects of power plant systems and equipment design and operation.
  • Design modifications using established Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes.
  • Project management services and oversight.
  • Interfacing with projects, contractors, and others to discuss results of assessments, identify and prioritize safety improvements.
  • Leading audits and quality assessments.

The MEC Director will lead and support the delivery of multi-disciplined products and services for Kinectrics’ key portfolios including: station capital projects, outage campaigns, refurbishment programs, new nuclear, nuclear equipment design, medical isotopes projects, and support to other departments.

The assigned market or service area will service a number of clients from various geographies with over 40 regular staff and a number of contract resources at any given time. Size and scope of accountabilities will vary in response to business needs. Aggressive growth targets are planned for the directorate and its related market size.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Lead the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Directorate. This will include accountability for safety, quality, scheduling, and budgeting related to projects, managing performance of unionized staff, succession planning, and sales/financial performance.
  • Responsible for directorate planning, including performance management, QA investigations, corrective action reporting, and sales/proposal preparation.
  • For select projects in the area of the Director’s proficiency, be accountable to lead a project team to execute the project as the Accountable Authority on behalf of the SVP ESP.
  • Represent the directorate on various working teams, implementing organizational change in concert with initiatives across the company.
  • Responsible for technical oversight, leading, mentoring, and resource managing the team to support all major technical challenges and project issues. These challenges/issues will likely involve technically complex problems in high pressure scenarios that require immediate and dedicated support.
  • Responsible for strategic planning for directorate. This involves business development and organization planning, supporting large CAPEX projects, new product development, and pursuing long-range business development opportunities.
  • Provide expert advice and support to Kinectrics’ Design Authority and other leaders including SVP ESP.
  • Ensure engineering qualifications are maintained in the directorate and associated project teams.
  • Champion continuous improvement – quality (apparent cause and root cause investigations), human performance, engineering quality, and project execution within the directorate and associated project teams.

Accountability Objective:

Under the direction of the SVP ESP:

  • Manage complex and unique relationships with existing and new clients to bring in orders that meet or exceed targets. Ensure appropriate marketing material is available. Work closely with marketing staff to develop new leads while maintaining and growing the existing client base.
  • Oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, to contribute to meeting or exceeding the revenue target. Projects are to be completed in a timely manner and profitably ensuring excellent customer service and quality.
  • Lead and motivate team members, achieving effective utilization of resources.
  • Seek to grow the scope of services provided by the Directorate.
  • Work closely with other Engineering Services & Projects and Bruce Power Site & Projects directorates and with service lines across Kinectrics to maximize opportunities.
  • Ensure that the business strategy is well developed and based on good market and competitor knowledge. The agreed strategy is to be clearly articulated and communicated.
  • Attend and participate in industry forums and represent Kinectrics business interests in a positive manner that encourages growth of services and revenue streams.

Customer Relationships and Orders

  • Lead contact with customers and other external stakeholders. Manages complex relationships and conflicts/issues.
  • Complete all service contracts within commitments of schedule, effort, and scope.
  • Ensure effective routes to market, including personal sales, and develop new business opportunities in line with orders target.
  • Build relationships with and influence current and potential customers for continued and new work.
  • Provide feedback and client intelligence (i.e., quality, customer satisfaction, safety, technical problems, and competitive intelligence).
  • Identify sales leads and work with sales team in sales planning, follow through and close.
  • Provide technical sales support through proposals and presentations.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Identify and support service and market development priorities.

Leadership

  • Facilitate internal relationships and effective use of resources.
  • Responsible for staffing and resourcing decisions, including scheduling and assigning work.
  • Perform or and support managerial functions such as hiring, promotion, performance reviews, pay increases, staff development and disciplinary actions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Identify growth and development opportunities for team members.

What You Need to Succeed:

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Science or Engineering. Studies specializing in Mechanical engineering are considered an asset. A post-graduate degree is beneficial.
  • Have a minimum of 13 years’ experience in power engineering and engineering management.
  • Substantial experience in project management and leadership in the nuclear industry.
  • Broad knowledge of the Canadian and CANDU nuclear industry with an in depth understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain excellent client relationships.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead large complex bids and develop/maintain key client contracts/relationships.
  • Working understanding of utility (client) commercial programs and systems.
  • Experience managing teams of knowledge-based experts and trainees. Ensuring that the team has the necessary expertise, competencies, and performance.
  • Possess a Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) designation.
  • Able to work in fast-paced environment and adapt easily while managing several competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to quickly comprehend and manage technically complex projects and issues.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in leading technical projects to successful conclusions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, and has demonstrated a high commitment to quality and delivering on client commitments.
