JOB DESCRIPTION – Director of Family Services

Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Part Time hourly (32 Hours) - some weekends and evenings required

Committed to the philosophy of Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North (Habitat VIN), the successful candidate will be a solutions-focused “people person” with exceptional communication and relationship-building skills. They will also have organizational and planning skills, business and financial acumen, and the ability to work under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.

Requirements:
● Computer proficiency in business applications.
● Vulnerable sector Criminal Records check.

Summary: The Director of Family Services is responsible for all aspects of family engagement, including but not limited to, family attraction, selection and support of all Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island
North family homeowners. The Director of Family Services hires, plans, trains, and develops Family
Services staff.

Recruitment:
● Lead recruitment campaigns, presentations, events and networking opportunities to attract family applications and support external relationship building with the broader community.
● Ensure all recruitment and application material is current and accessible to potential families.
● Manage all inquiries regarding family applications.
● Provide support, encouragement and counsel to applicants.
● Stay informed of other community services that can support community housing needs.

Selection:
● Manage and be an active member of two family services volunteer committees.

  • Liaise with the committee chair to ensure all members are educated on Habitat VIN principles and policies. This includes the preparation of all education material for the selection committees.

  • Prepare applicant files for the committees.
  • Attend, where possible, the initial home visits with new committee members.
  • Provide support and guidance to committee members.
  • Include committee members in the culture of Habitat VIN.
  • Recommend candidate families to the Executive Director
  • Onboard new family homeowners to Habitat VIN.

Support:
● Build relationships with homeowners that empower their independence and partnership with

Habitat VIN.
● Collaborate with all departments to ensure a safe environment for families.
● Manage family volunteer hours
● Mentor families:

  • Guide families through the steps into homeownership.
  • Seek educational and community-building opportunities for families.
  • Be available to troubleshoot homeowner and financial issues.
  • Support the development of a healthy community.
  • Deliver Habitat’s family training “Invest in Yourself”

● Public Relations:

  • Co-coordinate Key Ceremonies.

● Finance and Legal

  • Co-coordinate Insurance.
  • Manage mortgage delivery and transfer of titles
  • Educate families on the mortgage process.
  • Manage monthly mortgage payments, including annual assessments, temporary payment amendments, and municipal tax collection support and breaches of contract.
  • Support families as they develop Stratas

The responsibilities of the role also include:
● Ongoing evaluation of partnership success.
● Networking with other community organizations, groups and corporations to support the goals of

Habitat VIN.
● Participating in community organizations to stay current on the issues related to affordable homeownership.

● Developing and implementing goals, processes, and objectives for the Family Services Department.
● Ensuring that Habit VIN policy and procedures are followed.

● Participating in fund development opportunities and representing Habitat in the community.
● Attending Habitat Canada webinars and forums, and pursuing other local and national continuing education opportunities.
● Create monthly reports for the Executive Director.
● Liaison with the Executive Director and controller to prepare annual department budgets and manage expenditures
● Ensuring all Family Services related documents, both internal and external, stay current and that the department is operating effectively under current policies.
● Supervising one departmental support employee
● Other duties as required

Salary: Under Review

Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 32 per week

Salary: From $25.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

  • Courtenay, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
